I upgraded both a Vaio AR series 17". and a Vaio FZ series 15" to t9300's without any problem or update needed.

Just FYI for you who are willing!

No, sorry. Only notebooks with the Santa Rosa chipset can be updated to Penryn, since it is a SR update. Yours has the previous Merom chipset.

lower power consumption and better heat dissipation (ie, longer battery life). you also get a faster processor with more cache. check out anandtech for a detailed comparison.

Nope, even with the current Santa Rosa chipset using the new Penryn proessors, there has been an increase in battery life and performance.

Over, done with, gone. If you go into the case the warranty is void. You can update memory and hard drives. Sony provides access doors for both. But once you split the case all bets are off.

I don't think that you will get an hell of a performance gain. It's not worth upgrading.

wrong about the hard drive for SZ - if you upgrade the hd with the sz's it voids the warranty as you have to open up the case and not simply unscrew a section of the bottom....

although you can just put it back in if you like and sony will never know (no seal or anything)

    Hmmmmm.............

Don't know what happened to me. I swapped my T7700 out for a T9300 and got a fatal system error message. Got very scared and put the 7700 back in and thankfully it looks ok. I seem to recall somewhere, someone else mentioned they had to download an update for their machine to recognise the new processor. Can anyone offer any suggestions on what, if anything, is going on? I thought it was "plug and play"

    Regards to all

no, 100 percent not worth it.

in fact , the T7500 is not much slower than any of Penryn CPUs.

and these current Penryns are designed for Santa Rosa too, they are not Montevina , many people confused Meroms with Santa Rosa, Santa Rosa is the name of the current intel platform not name of a cpu , merom is the name of the T7xxx cpu and T5xxx c2ds.

Penryn is the name for these T9xxx and T8xxx(also it's the naame for upcoming montevina based CPUs). But these current Pneryns did not come with new chipset or new platform , so they are still SantaRosa.

I think if you have T7xxx no need to worry about these short-living Penryns.

Wait a few more weeks and get a Montevina Penryn , it will support DDR3 and 1066fsb.

    I think SP9300 is an interesting model considering its price(200US) /power(2.28ghz/energy efficiency(25w).

Also, it is worth to wait the new T9400(2.53) or T9600(2.8ghz), they will be a quite bit faster than these current Santa Rosa Penryns.

As long as you have warranty , you should never try changing your CPU , it is not worth it , since you lose your warranty and the performcne increase is too small IMO.
