I can switch on..I can see the flickering VAIO logo...images of the Win XP logo...
I can see the my don'd image as a wallpaper on the screen before it flickers and there's a total blackout but I can hear an announcement of Avast's anti virus has been updated.

Whats wrong with the screen blackout? Hardware or software problem?

I google LAPTOP SCREEN BLACKOUT PROBLEMS and there's an interesting discussion on ehow website about Sony Vaio's infamous problems with these blackouts.

Anyone here with the same problems and any good advices as I dont want to go to the repair shop and end up with silly costings....

Try to RDP into your laptop and view your desktop (I recommend using a crossover cable). If you can see your desktop than you know its either your screen or gpu related.

If you are getting any image it's a software or driver issue most likely.

Have you tried safemode to see if it stays on?
It could possibly a bulb or inverter problem, but that isn't likely if it's consistent in how it's working.

No offense to that Ehow article writer, but I wouldn't put any faith in it.

I used an external monitor and the same thing happened...and I can also hear avast announcing it has already updated the anti virus as well as hear my friend calling me through skype.
So...is it the sleeper button...driver... etc etc...
    The model is VGN A517S....

If your laptop screen black outs, your external monitor blacks out, and Windows logins in and operates then it seems like a driver/gpu issue (driver most likely-I've seen this before). Have you tried booting into safe mode?

The way I overcame this issue was using my original suggestion, a crossover cable and another pc. Remote in, uninstall drivers, boot into safe mode with network, run Driver Sweeper 2.7.5 for NVIDIA Display and PhysX, reboot into Windows, reinstall video drivers. This happened to a server I manage during a power failure..something corrupted the video drivers.
