Hi all im trying to fix my nephews laptop its about 5 years old now but still in good nick. Its a vaio vgn-fe31h. The problem im having is when i move the screen it either flickers or goes so dim i can barely see it. When i hook up to an external monitor and change the resolution the display on laptop comes back on and when tilted will flicker and go off again. Has anyone got any idea what im looking at here ,inverter, screen replacement or what....

    Cheers

Either inverter or broken wires in the hinges.

also possible that the ccfl tube is failing now, or it may be the inverter. try to change the resolution while the screen is working normal. Is the backlight turning off then for a short moment? If yes, that may be the issue:
The ccfl goes dark when you move it and it ignites again when changing the resolution.

Also try to reactivate the screen with standby mode. Another question: Is that occuring in BIOS?

the screen does go black when i change res when the screen is on and it does happen while in bios. Im pretty sure its something inside the lcd because it flickers and dims with a small touch or movement even if the rest of the laptop is kept perfectly still. Would that mean the screen would need to be replaced

When you got it dim, take bright light and check if you can see all the contrasts and read text. If this works, your issue is definitely related to something with the backlight (in your case most likely a CCFL). In that case you will only need to replace inverter and / or backlight. If not, replace the whole screen, there wont be something you can do other than that I guess.

Since I dont know your model, I dont know how hard to change it is. If I were you, I would first check if you can get holf of the backlight and / or inverter for cheap. If not, you can still change the whole display. Whatever is cheaper.

It is true that the backlight is "inside" the LCD, because it is needed at the whole display area. But in fact it is just a diffusor sheet, mostly out of plastic and the LAMP itself sits at the edges (mostly at the bottom edge of the screen - thats why there you always get kinda bleeding white when looking into the edge from a small angle). It should be possible to remove it.

However, first check the availability of the needed parts.

If you post some pictures, maybe we can help you more with the surgery. I need some sleep now (12:30 AM atm here) - good luck!

Ah good morning sir :). So that does not really give me any signs that it would definetely be the inverter. I seen an inverter on ebay for about 20 euro
