I just received a Sony Vaio PCG-705 notebook from a friend who hasn't had the time to figure out what's wrong with it for the past 4 years. Here's my problem:
When you press the power on button it starts up with the green power light coming on, when the screen's back light comes on the whole computer powers off about 2 seconds later. The whole failed boot process lasts only about 6 seconds and happens with or without the battery, with or without the power cord. I can't seem to figure out what's wrong nor anywhere online that explains of a similar instance or how to fix it. Can anyone help?

Pull the harddrive out and see if you can start and get into BIOS (F2 or F10). If not, time to get a new laptop probably, as the problem is most likely in BIOS or motherboard and it's going to be pretty difficult to find spare parts.
