    Hello!

I've problems starting my Vaio SZ2. They occured one day without changing anything (Hardware or Software) before.

If i push the power button, the screen backlight turns on but remains grey/black. No vaio logo, no boot screen, no bios access! I unscrewed the whole computer (3 years old) and checked all the cables. Then i released the screen cable from the graphic chip and tried booting with an external display! And that worked!

It seems to be a problem of the display/display cable or the graphic card.

    Any advices? Thanks!

    Stamina or Speed mode?

If its the graphics card (completely dead) then it should happen only on one of the two modes.

    OK, that's one step further.

The SZ 2 had a GForce 7400M GS, am I right?

By the way, when you said that you can't switch to SPEED mode, is the STAMINA/SPEED switch broken or something else?

Yep, the SZ2 has an Nvidia 7400 GS.

If the switch were broken (the actual switch) it should stay in one mode...

7400m GS means it shouldn't have any tendecies to fail prematurely.

    its a gefore 7400.

The switch isn't really broken, but if i switch to speed mode, the indicator light stays at stamina mode.

I already did a bios update (with external monitor), but the error still occurs.

Is it possible to test the function of the display or the display connector cable? Do all notebook displays have the same plug-mechanism?

If the light stay on "Stamina" then the switch is broken.

    Sorry,

but yes there is still a problem.

Stamina and speed mode work fine with external monitor.

But my display is still grey/black. I went to a local dealer but he couldn't help me because he had no such displays to test.

Well, you can't just switch dispalys.

    But what you now say:
Stamina works on the internal display.

Speed mode works only on an external display?

Under those circumstances - it may be a connection between the NVidia ad the display - I'm not exactly sure what the actual internal "wiring" is ...

    Hello DetlevCM,

then it must somehow be the connection between the NVidia and the internal display... :(

I assume your problem is solved by now... but I've had exactly the same problem... hat to send it in to get it fixed... they replaced the MoBo... was fortunately in the last month of warranty...
