I'm debating whether I should get the Vaio T350 or the Eee PC as a second laptop for portable purposes, such as if I have too much stuff in my bag and reeeeeeally can't fit an SZ in.
The T350 would be used obviously, but would only cost $700, while the New EEE pc will cost supposedly only $600.
T350
10.6" Screen, X-Brite, high res
60gb HDD (though might upgrade to SSD, or at least shove an SSD in the card slot and boot windows off of that)
Used, and can be bought right now off a friend
Built in BT (good for using a BT mouse)
$700
New EEE PC
8.9" 1024x600 res
8-12gb SSD, can be expaded through SD/SDHC card slot
Brand New, but must wait till summer, and potentially increased price (like what happened the first time)
Built in Webcam
$600
I know this forum may potentially be abit biased towards sony, but hell, so am i =P (keyword POTENTIALLY)
I have a question though, the T350 only has a Type I/II Card slot instead of an express card slot; Are express cards backwards compatible? Or does it like, completely not work with them? And if it does work but the speed is downgraded, would the SSD's speed still be better than the 4.2k RPM HDD?
If the SSD wouldn't work through the type I/II card slot, I'd probably just put a 100gb 7.2krpm ultra ATA in instead.
(oh yeah, and the SSD would just be used to boot XP off of and keep system files, everything else would be on the HDD)

No, Expresscard cards are not backwards compatible. I have heard of adapters for Expresscard slots to work with the PCMCIA cards for people wanting to use those cards in their new notebooks but not the other way around.
The T350, as with all of Sony's Vaio T series use 1.8" HDDs. None come in 7200rpm speeds, just about all are 4200rpm. There will be 120gb 5400rpm 1.8" HDDs coming out soon though from Samsung and Toshiba, don't know if they would work in the T350.
The T350 will have slower storage than the EEE, but 60gb is much larger than 12gb obviously. The T350 would also get better battery life. It can read only memory sticks whereas the EEE could only read SD/MMC cards. The T350 also has a 10.6" 1280x768 screen whereas the new EEE will have an 8.9" screen with (1024x600 I think???) resolution.
The T350 also uses a Pentium M 1.2ghz processor. We do not know for sure what the new EEE will use, some say it will be the same Celeron M 900mhz processor in the previous model.
I wouldn't worry too much about the 4200rpm HDD, however slow it sounds on paper, the one in my TZ is fine for XP, would be slow for Vista of course. I have no complaints of it myself. And of course, the T350 has a DVD burner vs no optical drive in the EEE.
I would go for the T350P, only a bit more expensive than the EEE but you get more and its already available to you from your friend. We have no idea when the new EEE will ship here. Like with the first EEE, it was announced back in June 2007 and was not in people's hands until November.
I thought your parents said they would not buy you such a small notebook? Or your buying this yourself? -
Yeah, they said they wouldn't for a main laptop, which is why they're buying me the SZ780N4, but this I'm buying myself; they're against me spending so much money on something which can potentially degrade my eyesight, but hey, it's my money.
Yeah, the T350 seems good to me, only problem was the speed of the HDD, but if you're fine with it, then I guess I shouldn't have any problems with running XP.
