Hope someone can help with this one. I transfer 4-5 gig movies between my XP computers over ethernet in 10 minutes... When I connect my new Vista TZ to the network, it takes a little over an hour and it shows 1.5-1.9 mb/sec transfer rate.. Why so slow? I ordered the XP downgrade disk but wondering if there is another answer... Thanks

Did you install Vista SP1? This is said to make the copy speed a little better. There is much discussion about this copy speed problem. Here, for example.

if you're copying to your vista machine, and haven't installed sp1, i'd recommend using robocopy (robust file copy) from the command line.

it's pretty much all i use when copying files to my vista machine at work.

I get 25MB/s transferring between my TZ running Vista SP1 and desktop running Vista x64 SP1 and going through an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station and D-link gigabit switches. I haven't done any modifications after doing a clean installation of Vista except for updating the ethernet driver to the latest version from http://www.marvell.com/drivers/driverDisplay.do?dId=101

Not too sure if you have tried these commands but here goes. Go to

Start search > type command > click command prompt on the left > type netsh and press enter > type dump and press enter > restart the laptop.

This clears TCP/IP corruption. Vista's TCP/IP stack is a POS and can cause slowdown and collpses of communications.

In device manager make sure your ethernet adapter is set to full duplex and re-install drivers if that doesn't clear it. You may be able to determine if your install of Vista has TCP/IP stack problems (beyond that which the netsh command can cure) by setting a manual tcp address in network properties. Try to set a high one like 192.168.1.240 rather than a low one like 192.168.1.3.

If its wifi (I know ya said it was ethernet but just in case
Also try channel changes on the router to see if that improves matters. Individual manufacturers of Wifi cards have preferred channels therefore if your card in an Intel (3945, 4965 etc) it will operate better on 1 channel over others. Also ensure that the power management of your wifi card is set to maximum transfer power in device manager adapter properties.

Thanks for all the input. Tried all the above(except SP1). No change...I'm thinking the article mentioned by John Ratssey above has alot of weight on this issue...I'm thinking Taphil's 25mb/sec is due to transfer between Vista and Vista. I'm going to install SP1. If that doesnt do it,,,,XP HERE I COME!
