I have a VGN-Z51WG-B laptop (Win7 x64). Since new the Vaio update tells me there are "No updates" available. If however I check manually via the esupport website there are numerous updates for my model which should be available via the Vaio Update Tool. Is there some security settings blocking detection? I have reduced IE8 Security down to "medium".
Any ideas would be appreciated

Don't rely on Vaio update, we all have the same problem and it's not security features blocking it or anything. I think it only triggers updates that are necessary or contain fixes, other than that (ie. enhancements), Vaio update will ignore them. IMO anyway.

Just spent the last tedious hour with Vaio online support...
1-Re-installed Vaio Update 4.2.0.07300 from recovery partition
2- Rest IE settings
3- Disabled start-up programs
Still the same!
I just coincidentally received a new NW-Series Vaio today, it is x64bit Win7, and its Vaio Update 4.2.0.07300 picked up all of the updates listed on the support site -
New Vaio Update 5 now available when attempting to use Vaio 4.

At first I didn't get any VAIO update, and guessed the reason was I had not registered. After registering I have been automatically getting quite a lot of updates, and the updater itself got updated to version 5. My gripe, however, is that the update mechanism does not respect my choice of web browser (Firefox), and keeps using IE everytime, and attempting to reset my choice. Some kind of sinister pact between Sony & Microsoft?

I recently had to reformat my C Drive and although I saved the VAio Updates to my D Drive I've been having horrendous problems simply attemting to download update from the Sony Site.
I want to update (Update 4 to 5) but nothing happens. I've registered and spent days off and on attempting to carry out what should be a very simple operation...to no avail. Can anyone help please
