My V505 hard drive died. While this was a good excuse to buy a SZ, I also baught a new Seagate Momentus hard drive for the V505. Tried to install the software from the recovery disk, but it stops 1/3 of the way through the process. I have tried it many times now --fails each time. I also tried using Seagates software to test/format the HD. The drive is fine... Any suggestions??

I have never replaced a notebook hard drive before, although I have done so on a desktop. In what way does the laptop need to support a hard drive? Why shouldn't I be able to put any brand of 2.5in drive and have it work?

Did you burn the recovery disc or was it provided by Sony? Perhaps the recovery disc is faulty?

Gave up on Vaio Restore DVD (it was the one from Sony) ... Installed Linux instead. No problems... except for the usual issue with installing the wireless driver (any suggestions?). Otherwise, works seamlessly....
