Hi,
I'd like to know if it's possible to change (upgrade) the CPU in a V505 Vaio from a P4-M @ 2.4 Ghz to a P4 @ 3.00Ghz
Here are the specs I found so far:
P4-M 2.4 GHz 512 KB 400 MT/s 24× 1.3 V 35 W Socket 478 Northwood (130 nm)
P4 3.0 GHz 512 KB 400 MT/s 30× 1.55 V ~80 W Socket 478 Northwood (130 nm)
Who can orient me to perform this?
-
have you opened it? is the CPU soldered to the board? it is still possible if it is but you will need to have a pro with an infra red solder station and reball skills.
I had the CoreSolo in my UX upgraded to a Core2Duo. It cost me about $150 IIRC, not including the new CPU. -
Nop, it's not soldered, you think it's still possible?
-
Hi CC, I found you here.

-
If they use the same socket, it might work. Honestly though, most cpu upgrades are not usually worth the time, money or effort. Put the money into memory and ssd and you will be happier.
-
agreed, going from 2.4 -> 3.0Ghz is not going to do that much
on my UX going from CoreSolo 1.2Ghz -> Core2Duo 1.2Ghz made a HUGE improvement. -
Excellent news. I'll buy the cpu @ amazon and will update with benchmark scores improvements (if any).
Thanks for your help.
Another question now that you mention the ram.
If the manual says that it only supports 1GB ram, but an update to the bios was made afterwards, will it be able to handle double? (2 dimms of 1GB instead of 2 dimms of 512mb of the same specs) ?
thanks! -
If I remember right, Intel spec says it can handle 2gigs.
Sony says 1 because that is all that they have verified.
That doesn't mean it will work though. Sony may have put a limitation in the bios or the bios just may not be able to deal with it properly. If you do get 2gigs working, let me know though (as with the chip), I would love to update my moms. -
Could you post the model number of your laptop?
It looks like the Mobile Pentium 4 Processor actually goes up to 2.6ghz.
Mobile Intel® Pentium® 4 Processors - M with 400 MHz FSB
VAIO : Sony Europe : Specifications
Could you also link to the processor that you intend to buy.
It's going back a bit, but i'm concerned that might be buying something that is not compatible. -
That is an issue, sockets changed quite often, to be honest, that era was sort of a mess for figuring out what works with what.
-
Sure, It's a Sony Vaio PCG-V505DC2P (P4-M @2.4Ghz)
Planning on upgrading to SL6YH Pentium 4 CPU (P4 @ 3.00Ghz)

SL6YH (Intel Pentium 4 3.0 GHz)
there are the links for the laptop specs, the ebay cpu model that Id like and a page with the cpu specs
please advice... -
I don't see an issue with compatibility (though there is some validity as to what leslieann said above). And as mentioned earlier, there may be BIOS / hardware limitations that may prevent the planned CPU from working altogether on the current machine.
If it does work... What I'd be most concerned of would be the TDP increase. I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up yet (or am I missing something...)
From a 35W to a massive 80W. Not only will that quite literally kill battery times, the potential for temp increases to sky-rocket out of control (beyond what the current heatsink assembly of your V505 is capable of) is pretty much imminent. -
I can't locate that processor on the Intel website which is strange.
Pretty much all i could find is that your chipset the Intel 845MP is designed, validated and optimized for the Mobile Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor - M.
http://www.intel.com/Products/Notebook/Chipsets/845MP-845MZ/845MP-845MZ-overview.htm
The big jump in W is concerning. If you owned a lower speced model i would say upgrade to a 2.6 4-M but you own a 2.4 so it's hardly worth it.
It seems that the Intel P 4 3ghz pulls up 492 passmark points
The 2.4M pulls up 275.
So almost double the performance. -
After lots of research, I think Rachel called, it, 2.6 is it. And it seems those aren't easy to come by.
You are looking at a different generation of processor (a newer one), so there is a good chance the bios will not support it. -
Ok, so bottom line, should i try it?
Should I buy the new CPU and give it a try?
(I really appreciate your opinions) -
I don't think it will work.
I suggest trying 2gigs of ram (buy local so you can return it if it doesn't work) and an SSD or faster drive instead. My moms I put one of the fastest ide drives in it I could, it certainly made a difference. -
Just To Close The Thread...... It Didnt Worked.
