Unfortunately, it may be time to replace it with a new fan. :(

Don't know about SZ7xx but I've replaced the fan on my SZ691. It involves tearing the machine down all the way down to remove the motherboard. There's a pdf with teardown instructions if you google "sony sz disassembly". If you decide to tackle this endeavor you'd want to clear some desk space and schedule a whole afternoon, maybe longer if you haven't seen the insides of your SZ before. Also since you're removing the heatsink you'll want to have some new thermal paste on hand when putting it back together.

The fan is either snap-in or twist-in, can't remember which. Also can't remember whether I replaced just the fan or the whole fan+heatsink assembly. Just know it cost me a pretty penny because the part hadn't yet hit ebay. (That was 1 year ago)

You can buy it on eBay. I replaced mine exactly one year ago when all the replacement fans on ebay were used, so I paid $80 for a new assembly from sparepartswarehouse. They go for a lot less now on eBay.

Search for "vaio sz fan". There are 2 types of fan+heatsink assemblies, the one for SZ6-SZ7 models is MCF-523PAM05. You can buy the whole thing or just the fan, but make sure the fan is made to fit MCF-523PAM05. There are a lot of used ones on there so be sure to get a new one.

If I remember right, it bolts in from top and bottom and uses quite a few screws, some quite a ways off.

Yep, the motherboard must be completely removed so you can go at the assembly from both sides. Kind of a PITA.

I am in the process of doing this on my VAIO VGN SZ640. The fan started making a racket over the last 9 months, it was horrible.

I found the fan assembly on ebay for $30. I just searched for the model number printed on the fan and a bunch of items popped up.

I disassembled the computer all the way down to the motherboard having to come out of the bottom pan. The fan assembly needs to be accessed from the top down and you have to go through nearly the whole computer. I was able to tear it down in just a few hours. Now I am only worried if I can remember how to put it back together :D . There are many screws and wires to disconnect. I did find a tear down pdf manual online after the tear down :( . Google for it, something like vgn sz disassembly. If you can remember where all the screws go then you don't need the manual. It is definitely better to have the manual, but it is definitely doable.

    Good luck!

    I have it.
It doesn't always show you the easiest way in, but you will get there. It also isn't entirely accurate for the later models in a few spots, but close enough.

On the screws, each should get a little more than 1/8in. (3mm) of material when tightened down. Much more is too much, much less is not enough. That should help you figure out the screws. If I remember right, there is only 5 (maybe 6) sizes in the entire thing, and 2 or 3 of those hare quite obviously different.

If you still have the wwan and don't use it, now is the time to remove it, as it's quite deep inside.
