    I have a VGN-FW180D with 4GB of ram.
Is it possible for me to upgrade from the 2X2GB sticks to say 8GB, 2X4GB of ram.

I was at a local store and the sales person told me that the bios may not support increasing the ram.

    Thanks
    Michael

Check your manual - if remember correctly the 100 series would take a max of 4 GB. The 200 series and later could take 8GB.

I could not find the manual, lost in a move.
Thats horrible, why do they limit ram installation in the bios.....?

Sony site looked like had a manual but was not in English.
Is your 32 bit or 64 bit (think that was the other item with the 100 series - 32 bit OS)

    I am currently using Windows 7 64bit.

So do you think the limit they had stated was more to do with the 32bit OS limitations rather than bios/chipset?

    Thanks
    Michael.

Yup max 4gb. Checked the RAM specifications on a few sites and maximum memory is stated as 4gb. (Maximum not Standard) There are a few others models too that don't support more than 4GB ram.

    Well thanks for the info.
It's horrible I cannot upgrade past 4GB, but I will just have to live with it.
Next time I will read more before purchasing a laptop.
