    Hi, 6 weeks ago I bought a Vaio VGN-FZ470E.

Thanks to a big mistake, the hard drive got formatted, and I lost the recovery partition. I managed to get Sony to send me the disks but when I try and install from them I get Error: 403.

Having spoken to Sony several times they think its a hardware issue and I should send it back to them, however I have managed to install a non-sony version of vista so that tells me it's a software issue.

Someone said that the machine is not recognising itself as a sony so wont install, which makes sense, however the bios says the serial number and everything else. even when I reset the bios to default it is still the same error.

It might be the recovery disks themselves being faulty but they are brand new from sony so it seems unlikely.

I would send it back as its under warranty but as I bought the machine in the US and I live in London it will prove costly (Sony want to charge me $150 to send it back to me, + I will have to pay a fortune to send it out there)

I spoke to someone in the US for an hour, and also someone on the 35p a minute line for a good 40 minutes as well, so I am reluctant to throw anymore money at this on top of the $2400 I spent 6 weeks ago.

I know it was my mistake, and I know I should have bought the machine in the country I live in, but surely someone can offer some kind of help so that I dont have to send it to the US?

    any help would be appreciated....bob

Just ask them to send another disc, or better yet send an ISO of the disc so you can burn them yourself.

If a single bit has a problem on that DVD, or there is a single scratch on the disc (no matter how small), it might not work.

The first step to fixing this would be to request another copy of the discs.

How are you trying to install from the disks they sent you? And did they send you disks for a US machine or a UK machine?
