Hello. I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NR498E laptop and recently I accidentally messed up the keyboard. I have found a replacement keyboard to put in, but I have never replaced the keyboard in a laptop before. I have read up on this and it looks to be a pretty straightforward endeavor with Vaios, but the problem is that there are so many different Vaio models that I have not seen how to replace the keyboard on my model in particular since it's a somewhat lesser known Vaio model.

I Googled this particular model and everything but have not found how to remove the keyboard for it, and I really don't want to attempt this replacing task without first knowing for sure what to unscrew from the back of the laptop and which latches to push up on on the keyboard to pull it out. Once those tasks are done it should be fairly straightforward to unplug the old one from the ribbon cable and replace it with the new one hopefully. I came upon this forum and figured you guys could help.

Here are a couple of pictures of my laptop to get an idea of what I'm working with here (keyboard is a bit dirty at the moment, so my pardons in advance):

I was wanting to replace the keyboard with a black one anyway before it accidentally got messed up since it's really hard to keep this white one clean.

With that being said, I hope one of you can help me out. I will be ordering the replacement keyboard towards the end of the week.

Anyone? Would really appreciate some input on this.

If those pictures aren't enough I can take a few more.

Can't really help you out with the keyboard replacement. However, I have a Vaio C that has the same style keyboard as yours and to unclip it from the chassis (after removing one screw from the bottom) there were a few attachment points on the top and a few on the bottom (like 3 each or so). I just took my time to unclip the clips (you can see them when you look closely from above) with a flat tool like a credit card. I had no need to unpin it (I was just doing a cleaning) but just make sure to not rip anything when unclipping the connector.

My computer only had one screw on the bottom near the center to undo. Yours may be the same but it might not be as well.

You might want to look at this to see if it helps you, but it's to remove the HDD instead: Taking apart a Sony VAIO to replace the hard disk drive | Yann "Bug" Dubois

Now, to order the right keyboard, I would recommend taking the keyboard out so you can look for the part number underneath it to make sure the ones you're looking at online are the same number. (A black one may also be compatible but I'm not sure)

You may also want to invest in one of these for your new keyboard: ENJOY Keyboard Protector
The picture shown is not the NR computer, but you will get the proper skin if you do decide to order it.

Well the replacement keyboard I'm getting is this one:

    V072078CS1 Sony VGN-NR White Keyboard

Says it's compatible with the model I have. I know I said I was getting a black one but the site I'm trying to get it from seems to have taken it down. :/

My computer doesn't appear to have just one screw near the bottom. Looks like there are two there. Maybe I will try those.

I will also take that keyboard protector into consideration as well. Thanks for responding. :)

Any other suggestions are welcome as well.

If you look at that image on the website you linked, (assuming that keyboard will be the same one you're ordering) there is only one screw hole on the bottom shown. What I would do is order the keyboard and see how that looks, then try and disassemble your current computer knowing how this new one is supposed to go in.

So you're saying it wouldn't be compatible with my computer? Was wondering about that, but it says it works with all NR series computers as well. I was also looking at this one since it's black and cheaper:

    NEW SONY VGN-NR Series Keyboard NSK-S6101 9J.N0A82.101

But it looks to only have one screw hole near the bottom as well. May have to open it up before buying the keyboard.

No I never said it won't work on your computer. I was saying that on the picture shown (assuming it's accurate to what you will get) there is only one screw hole on the bottom. So I am inferring that your assessment that there may be two screws holding your keyboard in may be incorrect.
