I was wondering if anybody have found a suitable OEM SSD 256Gb or 512Gb at affordable price?
Are the VPC-Z1 SSD compatible with the LIF connector in the VPC-Z2 ??

    Thanks a lot!

I've only seen this replacement posted on the forum: Aliexpress.com : Buy 512GB LIF SSD MZRPA512HMFU 000S0 For Sony Z Z2 VPC Z21Q9E/B VPCSA35GX VPCSA28GG VPCSB1AFJ VPCZ2390X VPCZ217GH VPCZ21V9E/B from Reliable ssd suppliers on China Electronic Digital Technology Co., LTD

Worth it? I dunno, and I haven't seen a 256 GB version. For a quick and dirty solution I grabbed a SD card and a Memory Stick that I just keep mounted and shoved all my music and movies to them. Amazon prices for a nice 128 GB SD card are about $150.

I just ordered the 512 MZRPC512 from Aliexpress and installed it last night. If you are interested, now is the time. There is lots of inventory, and they're willing to reduce the price on these obscure SSDs. I got mine for $270.
    steps:
    1. buy SSD (this takes a while to ship) - mine took about 20 days
    2. install Acronis True Image - you can use other solutions, but this to me was the easiest program to use
    3. create a backup to an external hardrive
    4. create a recovery media to usb using acronis
    5. turn off your machine and install the new SSD that you just received in the mail!!
    - be patient here and go slowly
    - lots of small screws of various sizes
    - tip: arrange the screws in a map-like arrangement
    - watch the video on youtube for disassembling the z2
    - make sure the latch is secure on the ribbon for the SSD
    6. close everything up nice and tight, but don't strip the screws
    7. when you reboot, press F2 repeatedly to go to bios and change the boot order to:
    external disk
    internal disk
    network
(it uses f5 and f6 to move up and down... weird)
    8. in the bios, change the raid setting to [show] from [hide]
    - you need this to configure the raid drive
    9. save and exit
    10. press ctrl-i to enter the raid controller setup
    - configure it as per defaults
    11. reboot with your restore/recovery usb in the drive, not your acronis backup
    - once acronis restore boots up, plug in your backup harddrive, and follow the steps to restore to your new SDD
    - watch in amazement as your computer comes back to life exactly as it was before you started this process
    - after all this is done, you'll be sad and confused for a moment because your SDD hasn't changed size at all
    - 'my computer' will show the same small size SDD, but wait
    12. open disk management
    - here you'll see there is lots of hd space waiting to be used
    - go to your active partition which holds your window and right click to show the option to extend your drive
    - do this and include the new bit of SDD space
    - it'll take a second, but after that you'll have a fully restored drive with lots of additional space.

the whole process (including backup and restore time) took me about 2.5 hours to complete

I know this is a slightly older model now, but with windows 10 around the corner (and free as an upgrade) now is the time to do this.

my 8gb i7 now has the room to do cool stuff... hopefully it'll help you as well.

EDIT: Thanks anytimer for the clarification. While I know the difference between SSD and Harddrive, it is technically incorrect to equate them.
I did try to keep the wording of these instructions as simple as possible so as to not scare off people who might not be overly technically inclined.

An SSD is a solid state drive. Please refrain from calling it a harddrive. :p

My VPCZ2 is saying "operating system not found" most of the time now, so i guess its time to replace. Vivek, thank you very much for the straightforward directions, I'm eager to try them out. I went to AliExpress, I couldn't find any MZRPC512, however I did find the 512GB SSD in the link above that. It was over $600! So, Vivek, can you give me more information on the 512GB drive for $270?
    Thanks!
    Ken

I just successfully upgraded a VPC-Z2 SSD from 128 GB to 512 GB.
Purchased a MZRPC512HAFU from novoshopping on eBay for £178:
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111661657...l?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=111661657661&_rdc=1
Dispatched from China within 2 days and received in UK within 10 days. Item as described and looks brand new.
See for how to open up the laptop.
Followed Vivek Moorthy's prescription (above) to install, with two variations:
    (a) used Windows 7 built-in backup to create a system image and a repair boot disk
    (b) Booted from repair disk to restore was failing with "No disk that can be used for recovering the system disk can be found" until I made the boot order "internal disk" before "eternal disk". This is a known issue with Windows repair and restore, and doesn't stop the boot from the external disk because the internal disk has no OS on it at this stage.
Don't forget Vivek's instruction to make the RAID setting visible in the BIOS and then ^I into RAID setup and configure a RAID0 volume.

Just signed up to let everybody know that i have successfully followed the above instructions and it works as advertised - Thanks a lot
The difficult part was to find a SSD that i was comfortable buying
    I ended with this one:
    http://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-...GB-MZRPC512HAFU-RAID-MLC-SSD/32324375959.html

I picked up this info somewhere on my path

"MZRPC512HAFU-000SO is better than MZRPA512HAFU because the control is different and life with speed is higher than MZRPA,mzrpc it is the third Gen SSD, MZRPA is the Second Gen ,speed is hve a large different"

    Thanks again

PS: i ended up installing Win10 - and I have not yet figured out how to get the battery care functionality working (the ability to only charge to say 50%, etc)

Thanks for the detailed instructions to all.
Does this work for any Z21 model? In particular Z21A9E?
Anyone know the difference between HAFU and HBFU in the SSD model numbers?
