Hey forum I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction with this issue,

I have had this laptop for a bit more than a year and the warranty just ran out about 15 days ago, and since literally that day (typical) my laptop has begun to break down.

The main symptom is overheating; this thing used to be so silent and now it is so loud, idling at around 5% processor usage it is at about 80 degrees which I think is almost acceptable. As soon as i do anything that uses the processor the temperature spikes so fast its ridiculous, if i open a internet browser for example it goes to 90-99 degees within the second and the fan maxes out a second later.

If i am too demanding; say i have 10 tabs or so i am restoring then it will just hit 105 degrees or whatever the safety shutdown is and turn off.

it is not full of dust as i took it apart and air dusted it quite well and it didnt seem like there was much dust in their in the first place.

my hunch is that the thermal paste or such has dried as it has no problem dissipating heat once the cpu has idled its just when the cpu is working it has no chance to keep up.

i currently have the laptop on its screen so the base is in the air and a fan blasting it for backup. ambient temperature in Australia here is about 27 degrees.

If you could give your opinion; advice; experience; seeing as i may have to pay for it to be fixed it may be best to know exactly what to get fixed.

    Thanks in advance!

80 at idle IS too high. Sounds like either fan is failing, heatsink is clogged (dust) or more likely with those temps is heatsink is dislodged from the CPU in which case you'd need to remove, replace grease, and reinstall heatsink assembly.

Thanks for the fast reply; just got quoted $300 from sony and $100 from a few local repair stores to resit the heatsink.

I might look into doing it my self; do you happen to know if standard desktop thermal paste would be acceptable; say arctic silver or the likes.

And are there any guides to dismantling the heatsink/fan in my laptop? I did a quick search and there are a few related bits and pieces but nothing directly for that issue.
