    HI, My son very kindly gave me his old laptop after treating himself to a new one. Problem is that it will not run with power adapter plugged in. It will charge when laptop is off, will not start if power adapter is plugged in but will start if only on battery. Will shut down right away if I plug adapter back in. I have tried brand a new Sony power adapter but have the same results, also same results when running in safe mode. If I leave adapter plugged in but switched off at the mains laptop will run fine on battery. Tried fitting a new power jack but still the same results. All out of ideas and would hate to throw this nice looking laptop in the bin if there is something I could do to solve the problem............any help would be very much appreciated.

    Are you using a genuine Sony power adapter and battery? Also it is probable there might be a blown fuse on the motherboard or battery pins causing a short and, preventing power going to the laptop when it is on, that is why it is charging the battery with the laptop off. You should check the motherboard or have the motherboard checked for any blown fuses and or shorts, this requires complete dis-assembly of the laptop though.

    If you bring it to the shop, they will likely tell you to replace the motherboard.
    You may ask someone who are fixing XBOX or PS3, they may be able to help.

    * UPDATE*

    After another observation, I noticed that when the laptop was started up while cold and with the charger pugged in, it would run for 3/4 minutes before closing down. I dis-assembled and to my surprise found that the paste on heatsink had all but vanished......I'm guessing this is causing it to overheat? To late to purchase thermal paste this evening. Will update tomorrow after I've applied new paste.
