my daughter gave me her laptop to fix and although I know quite a bit about computers I know nothing about laptops. when I turn it on I am presented with the vaio screen and nothing else. I eventually got into the bios by repeatedly pressing the f2 and all seems fine there, but on exit of the bios it just goes back to the vaio screen and will not boot to windows at all.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Hit F8 instead of F2. This should give you the option to boot from safe mode.
this can differ from model to model so if it doesn't work try F12 or the delete key.

hi, thanks for your reply, I Have tried f8 and f12 along with delete key but nothing, when i press f2 it comes up "entering system setup" but thats it, it just hangs there, if i repeatedly press f2 i can get into the bios but thats it.

Im wondering if its something more internal, i have opened the laptop up and noticed that hdd is spinning and the fan for the cpu is not

^^Agreed. Re-installing the os or replacing the harddrive could be your only options. Try changing the boot order in the bios; have boot from harddrive at the top.

If you're booting from a disk put boot from optical drive to the top of the list.

I don't think it would even start if there was a faulty componant so i think we can rule that out. It must be the harddrive. If you had a external enclosure to hook it up to your desktop then it may help in diagnosing the problem?

Sorry i meant external(damn typo :D) If you can find one that can fit your harddrive then you can hook it up to your computer the same as any external harddrive. You can see if it boots onto your desktop and if not run virus scans etc.
