    Hey Guys,

I have a Vaio Z (VPCZ13) that always shuts down randomly. I'm assuming this is overheating as I have reformatted my computer and when I switch my graphics system from "Speed" to "Stamina" the problem also goes away.

When it does shut down, the bottom left hand side of the notebook is quite hot.

Can anyone confirm that this is an overheating issue with what I have posted above and also does anyone know of any fixes to my problem?

    :(

Thanks guys, all replies appreciated! (The laptop is a month out of warranty too, urgh)

Could you download HWMonitor and report back your laptop's CPU and GPU temperatures when it seems to be hot/overheating?

Okay, right now. I'm playing a simple online flash game (I don't do intense gaming other than online bomber-man and the like) and CPU Core1 maxed at 102 and Core2 maxed at 104 degrees.

GT 330M maxed at 87 degrees.

So it seems as if the CPU is the problem.

Could it be dust related as it only started happening in the past month?

Aaaah! That's way too hot. Which Thermal Control Strategy do you have set in VAIO Control Center? (Power Management> Power Options)

For now, it might be best to set it to silent so that the CPU will be set to throttle.

I suppose it could be related to dust. Maybe you can try some compressed air into the vent on the left side.

I'm on Balanced, has been set to silent.

I'll try the compressed air. Can you think of anything else that could have caused it?

What's the max temp you're getting in the silent profile?
(note: this will slow down your computer quite a bit)

Ideally a max temp in the 80s or lower would be good.

Someone else got overheating due to dropping their laptop and the heatsink got loose or bent.

I can get my CPU to hit high 80's or low 90's just running MSE scan with turboboost on. While playing Bad Company 2, i can get it to thermal shutdown ~104Cish

I do have one of those loose fans that makes that really annoy grinding sound at low RPMs... but it's fine at higher RPMs. In any case, maybe you want to check if your heatsink is loose

Yeah, mine is a bit hot too. CPU goes up to around 91'c when stressing it.

Definitely not a workstation-type cooling, so we should be gentle and not stress the machine too much.

    ;)

yeah your heat sink is apprently not contacting the chips so they're idling hot and can't be pushed , and with no heatsink the heat just skyrockets right up past shutdown temp real quick, even tho its already quick with vaio z cooling setup performance-to-size ratio.

    so yep.

    OMGGGGGGG, it worked.

I blew compressed air into the vent and all this white dust/powder came out of it. I was like ?!? because when I shined a light into the vent it looked clean, thought it must have came from the air compressor but nope.

Computer CPU core is now idling at 49-55 degrees and GPU at 52 degrees on performance setting.

Let's see how long it last and thank you so much again!

Also, would have the constant overheating earlier damaged my CPU/GPU :<
