Hi, i have the 2010 Vaio Z, and the 2009 Vaio Z
The vaio Z 2009 Fan no longer spins at all.
The Vaio Z 2010, fan sounds like a broken motorcycle engine when it starts up, when it eventually speeds up it sounds a bit better but still sounds like its about to go. If you use it in Stamina mode the sound never goes away since it does not heat up enough to get to high enough RPM for the sound to go away.
Will sony repair this for free? Its really disappointing to spent almost $2000 on a laptop to have the fan rattling 1.5 years later and barely being able to cool the laptop.
It seems like a design flaw, esp having 2 models with the same problem.
It seems to me like the Vaio Z may be a laptop to avoid getting due to this, I am not sure how the S, or SA handle this since they have an even smaller vent.
I feel completely ripped off purchasing these laptops and having one of them failed 100% and the other on the way. They are not even old, or slow both are fantastic computer and the through that they were not designed to last for more then 2 years really bothers me.
I am a student and cant send them for what it will probably be close to $300-$500 dollars to repair them.
Is there anything i can do. I feel i dont ever want to buy another Vaio laptop because of this.
I still have an almost 10 year old Thinkpad X31 that works with no issues, yet a $2000 Sony laptop, 2x are failed after 1.5 years.
The 2009 model, eventhough older I gave to my Girlfriend after 1 year, and she rarely used it, and it broke. So in reality that laptop only had about 1.5 years of use, just as the 2010 model.
Edit: Wanted to point out these laptops were not used in a very hot environment and were pretty much kept on a desk their entire life.

See if you can get the dead fan replaced. There is a post here somewhere by a guy who fixed his noisy fan by putting lubricating oil (sewing machine oil?) on the shaft/in the bearing. Worth a shot, IMHO.
