I wonder if theres any chance that i can use the HDMI video out without switching to the speed mode on my Sony Vaio Z? The Stamina mode should be able to transfer the video to my TV without switching to Speed mode. Any hacks etc?

Um, when using HDMI you have to be near an electrical outlet. So why do you need to use stamina mode?

And no, HDMI is nVidia-only, unless Sony has changed something lately. The integrated video doesn't have HDMI output.

I I remember correctly the HDMI is hardwired to the GT330m while the VGA harwired to the Intel Chip. Its for that same reason that we can't output to 2 external monitors, because when one card is on, the other is off.

    Cheers.

Still, only one GPU is active at a time.

But that's not why the Z can't drive 2 external monitors - my 4 year old Asus laptop with a single nVidia 7700 card can drive two external monitors. The fact that the 330m can drive the laptop monitor and 1 external monitor proves it can handle 2 monitors simultaneously, just not 2 external monitors. It could be a restriction created because of the hybrid setup, or poor internal design, or...? Disappointing, regardless.

Really? That means you cannot use the VGA port when being in speed mode? Did not try that at all but that sucks when you want to show 3d stuff over a projector.

Any projector with good enough quality to show 3d should have HDMI.

That being said, it is lame if this is true that you cannot display over VGA on the nVidia.

I'm pretty sure you can display to either HDMI or VGA when on Nvidia/Speed mode, just not both.

On Intel/Stamina mode, only VGA output is possible.

Do you guys have anything like the following?

The Compaq 7500 is connected via VGA, and the QHTF42 connected via HDMI. If I try to tick the third screen, the following message appears: This graphics card supports up to two displays.

This is from my BenQ Joybook S42 with Intel/nVidia Hybrid Graphics. Currently using the Forceware 197.72 from Dell/Alienware for the M11x. :D

Hi. I have a Z13 and I have just tested it out. Either chip can only support up to two monitors (Don't know if its a software/hardware/implementation problem). From the NVIDIA chip you could output to Laptop + (HDMI or VGA). And from the Intel you can output to Laptop + VGA only. So the HDMI is unique to the NVIDIA. I guess that is so because the HDMI can also support audio signals, which can be (optionally) sent from another chipset (Nvidia High Definition Audio) and not the Realtek, if you so choose to send audio through your HDMI.

I just tested my vaio z with 330 m Nvidia card. It is able to work on VGA in full HD (1920x1080) while in speed mode and stamina mode.

I have another problem. I have been unable to get the HDMI to output in good quality in full HD mode (the VGA works fine).

Did you get good qualiity display (better than VGA) in full HD mode via HDMI?

It would have been great if I could get the Intel adapter to output to HDMI.

I need HDMI because the quality (if it works) is much higher than VGA (as I have tested with other laptops).

I output to my 24 inch full HD monitor via HDMI. Quality is exactly as you would expect from a digital connection.

What quality issues are you experiencing? If you are outputting to a TV you may need to find the option for '1:1 pixel mapping' in the TV menu.

I am experiencing poor color quality (the fonts are all messed up.. I think this is called overscan but I am not sure).
The following picture describes the problem (not my image).

I get a display similar to the right side with hdmi and with vga, similar to the left side.

It is not true, the 330M can output over VGA

Also check your sharpness settings. Try lowest sharpness setting to avoid software image sharpening which results in this kind of fonts.

The TV must be doing some internal processing on the image... "Movie mode" or "Enhance colours" or whatever. You gotta turn that off. Look for "PC mode" or "Graphic mode".

The VGA on the Z is very good, I can barely tell the difference between HDMI and VGA on my Sony BRAVIA KDL-40EX400

Actually it is HDMI that gives me some problems with that TV, but I think it is the TV's fault. The very top of the screen has a slight flicker when I use HDMI. What is even more interesting is that if I turn on 24P mode or display as PAL 50 Hz, the flicker goes away.

Is this some sort of power line interference issue?
