Well at least my Z13, the display is made by AU Optronics and it says made in japan. I was surprised to see this as I thought the displays were made by toshiba. When compared to to a z12 fhd which probably does have a toshiba display, the Z13 has a more even back light and slightly nicer colors. What do you guys think?

MFR's sell off their old LCD fabs all the time, and AUO commonly picks them up. I can't see AUO building fabs in Japan so I'd guess they bought that particular Toshiba line.

IMHO, that's awesome news. It looks like more screen manufacturers are producing high res 13.1" screens! :D

You probably see the glass as half full too.
I see it as awful news, showing that Toshiba has abandoned producing high res 13.1" screens, and sold off their fabrication unit to a company known to extend the production life by running the production without any new improvements/inventions.

In 2003, you could get 1600x1200 laptops, and the standard was 1280x1024. Now in 2011, the standard is 1280x800 and you'll have a hard time finding better than 1600x900. Similar for desktop displays, which commonly were 2048x1536 capable and 8 bits per colour, but now are 1920x1080 and only a sixty-fourth as many colours.
    Eight years of progress.

^True but the fabs don't normally get upgraded anyhow. LCD vendors just keep building newer generation fabs and delegating the old fabs (normally) to smaller panel sizes due to cut efficiencies.

I wrote down the part number on a piece of paper. Ill get it to the forum by tonight. The AU screen is definitely nicer than the one on the z12. It has slightly nicer color, better blacks and much much better light distribution.
