Anyone try to replace these through Sony parts? They're like $4-8 bucks each, which is outrageous. Do you guys know if the screws are unique to Sony? Or can you get them from hardware stores or something?

You can get generic Sony replacement screw kits from Ebay and the like. I bought 3 or 4 kits in the hopes one would contain a screw of the right length for a Z591.

Out of the hundred or so pieces, none had the right depth but the threads were right. I used a Dremel tool to shorten one and it worked fine.

Any reason to believe these kits would have the right depth (very shallow) for the RAM cover on a Z11? I don't have a Dremel and am not looking forward to the task.

I love to help you out with that, just pulled one of these 2 screws that hold my battery cover and they are everything but shallow.

It's a M2x10 raised head philips screw. You can get them in a well-sorted hardware store or via ebay for a few cents. You can also get them for ridiculous prices: SONY 2-048-596-03 Sony Vaio Vgn-Fe6 Series Screw Refurbished

@SurferJon, sony does many things proprietary, but at least their screws are generic.

    Cheers!

If you can find the right kit, sure. Screws aren't proprietary in themselves, but Sony uses many different lengths and these lengths vary by model.

The screw diameters are shared tho which is the hard part. There are 3 or 4 types.

If you get one of the kits and don't want to cut them to size, ALWAYS choose the shortest one that fits. I've got a nice little nipple on my Z1's keyboard plate because I used one that was 1/32" too long.

If you don't have a Dremel tool with at least eleventeen-hundred cutting bits, your geek cred just went down :)

Thanks. Truth be told, I do have a Dremel, but it is buried from two moves ago, so I suppose that is almost as geekless as not having one, but I think you have convinced me to put it on my X-mas list, lol. What I miss the most is the polishing wheels. ;)

Well, I don't mean to trouble you, but I was mistaken: the screws for the Ram cover are the longest ones used in the Z1. I know you are in Germany, however, and just the bother of shipping to the US is not worth it. I'll just get one of those kits and hope for the best. It seems so un-Sony-like to use standard diameter screws when they could have just as easily spec'd unconventional screws so we would have to buy replacements from them at, oh, $10/screw. Come to think of it, they are willing to screw customers for no cost at all. :D :D

What, you can't get M2x10 screws in the us? Go to your local hardware store or R/C modeling store and buy some for a few cents.

The big hardware stores don't carry machine screws that small.

Go to a hobby store if you can't wait on ebay. Like pyro said, the remote controlled car/heli/plane section will have small machine-screws.

Well, first, I haven't looked. Second, I failed to notice that you gave me the code for the screw type. Yeah, think I'm "up to this task." (Also found 2 of the 4 I was missing in the bottom of a bin!.
