    Hey people!

i'm not sure if this question has come up before. if it has, then im sorry and would appreciate it if you directed me to the thread.

lately my z series's fan has been going crazy. it needs a restart for it to come down. even putting it to sleep doesn't fix it. and im not really doing anything big. just iTunoes, firefox and usually msn and/or skype.

    any ideas???

Check under task manager if anything's taking up alot of cpu... and if you want, capping cpu at 99% turns off turboboost for the i5/i7's... In any case, it'd be nice to tell us what Z you have...

It's a VGN-Z56MG from the middle east. i've checked processes and theres nothing that's taking up too much. the CPU doesn't even reach 99%...

I downloaded a trial version of Everest and its telling me that the CPU temperature is around 70C. is that average or too high?? the fan's goin crazy and the CPU usage is around 10-15% :/

That's too hot, it should idle around 55-60, maybe even less. Under load though is a different story I can hit around 92.

Your CPU is being used by...?
A quick check with Task Manager usually will suffice.

Make sure you're viewing tasks for all users, and find the app that's using (however much) CPU. Also, might pay for you to update FireFox. Older versions have had issues in regards to how it uses system resources (though that was more graphics related). Regardless, update FireFox if you can.

A VGN-Z CPU should idle near the mid 40'C to around the low 50'C (and lower with the Intel graphics).
A temperature around 70'C is not high per-say, but it is if the laptop's not (supposedly) doing any work. Heck, you might have something malicious in the OS if the above Task Manager method doesn't show anything.

...for reference, the highest I've gotten my VGN-Z (for the CPU) is 98'C. But that was after a few long hours of CAD rendering. These days, watching subbed 1080p .mkv files the CPU for me peaks around 83'C or so.

mine idles around 70-80 degrees with only firefox running and its the latest version. task manager shows that the cpu usage is between 10-20% and nothing more. thats with all processes showing.

    any other ideas??

Curious, but have you tried closing all instances of Firefox and seeing how the temps are? Or maybe checking the temps as soon as you boot into windows (from a cold-start)?

The fact that Firefox alone is using 10-20% of CPU is pretty indicative of it being the culprit. What are you doing in Firefox that makes it consume said CPU power? That's understandable if you're watching a video on Youtube (>480p). If nothing (ie, it's idle on a flashless / videoless web page), then it might be time to move on to another browser maybe...?

The fan speeds at respective temperatures on a VGN-Z, from my own research with recent fan issues of my own:
< 30'C is stopped (will start again at low speeds when 35'C or greater)
    > 45'C will kick it into mid gear
    > 60'C will kick it into high gear (same speed as PERFORMANCE setting in VAIO CONTROL CENTRE)
    > 80'C will kick the fan into the highest speed possible

the cpu's temp is around 60C after a cold start. i dont really know why. maybe everest is showing me the wrong number... and its not only firfox that's taking up the 10-20% of cpu usage. theres kaspersky too. its not always that high either though. max is 20% but usually 5-10. sometimes 10-20.
