I've had eye on Z Series for couple days, but there exists a mystery I couldn't figure it out.

I've searched this forum and the net, still no answers.

On the sony's official USA website ( www.sony.com)

Sony claims VGN-Z790 CTO has upto 7.5 hours of standard battery life.

However, other preconfigured Z Series laptop such as VGN-Z790DND, VGN-Z798Y/X, VGN-790DLX, VGN-790DKX, VGN-Z790DMR, and/or VGN-720D/B has upto 6 hours of standard battery life. It's mystery I was unable to figure out. Anybody has any infos about it, please let me know.

P/S Also what's difference between Z790 and Z720? (I mean fundamental differences like circuitry design or expansion limitations such as maximum ram support and so. Couldn't figure this out... probably one of those model number decryption wizard would know it.) Help guys~!!!!

I would imagine on the CTO you could configure slowest CPU + one SSD and that would run you the most power. All the preconfigs are kind of decked out. I'm sure theres some crazy odd config of parts that to Sony seems like it adds that 1.5 hours.

    OR

Its just a lack of proper communication/coordination.

I thought about it, too. However, Tom's Hardware has shown the world that SSD in current market don't save power consumption that much and in some cases SSD consume more than traditional drive. Also Z790 CTO at bare configuration has exactly same Core 2 Duo P8700 2.53Ghz with TDP of 25W like others, 2GB, 160GB HDD, and CD/DVD RW. If it was difference between totally decked out version and bare stripped, I'm sure 7.5 hours of standard battery life probably have some annotation reference number we can commonly see in wild claims. Plus 25% up battery time only can be achieve by better or/and higher capacity battery with innovative power management and circuitry design.

    Somebody gotta know this.

Using WiFi? That uses a fair bit of power.
Just reading e-books at the lowest possible brightness and all wireless and USB devices turned off, my Z-590 lasts a full work day.

To get 7+ hours on the Z you need to run in stamina and turn off wifi.

Turning off wifi gives, at least for me, a massive battery life increase. even more than running in stamina mode :p

What can you get in a CTO that you don't get in a PreConfig??!?!?!?!

    Did ya get it yet?

    That's RIGHT!

    9 CELL BATTERY!

I'm so smart

It's ok, I know I'm amazing, you can hold the applause.

Sorry to disappoint you, but condition is virtually same cuz... it's 7.5 hours batter life... using standard battery. That's the claim. So... it's still unsolved (regular preconfigure models claim 6 hours on standard battery)

Yea just read that, I'm going back to my whole whoever wrote it being stupid thing.

Maybe only having 1 ram stick would save you power?

c'mon all the things you, others and I came up with, can't & couldn't account for 25% increase in battery life claim in exactly same standard battery.
