I would like to let you know that the search is over. Sony had posted all the bios and drivers for Vaio Z Windows 7. You can go to here to get the bios:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=426448&page=12
Thanks for sh4rkt for the bios link. Everything is working now, including the brightness control in speed mode.
-
Note:
1. You NEED to install the new BIOS before you can get the files to work properly
2. Check which BIOS is meant for your machine. Even though BIOS should work regardless of which models, I take no responsibility if you managed to fry your Motherboard
3. These are tested and verified to be compatible with Z1 machines and above
4. These are Windows 7 x64 drivers
Installation Order:
- This is for a fresh Windows 7 installation
- If you are doing it for an "upgrade" Windows 7, you should uninstall the old drivers before attempting to install the new ones given below
1. Install the new bios which is given in the link below.
....Generation 1 - 2 Vaio Z should install R2 Bios
....Generation 3 - 4 Vaio Z should install R4 Bios
2. Go to Control Panel -> Device Manager -> "?" , and click to install by randomly selecting a "?" and click "Update Driver Software...".
....After that, go to "Browse my computer for Driver Software" and click on the folder that you have downloaded all the new files (given below)
.... Note: You do not need to install it in order
....a) Touchprint sensor (WBF)
....b) Sony FEPD driver
....c) Sony PICD driver
3. Install Nvidia driver and Realtek (located at Point 3)
4. Install Sony Controllers (located at point 10). You may need to install all, except Battery Checker (located at point 10f) which is not necessary
5. Install SD and MS drivers (located at point 4), if it's not working for you out-of-the-box
6. Install Protector Suite 2009 for Fingerprint device (located at point 5c). Infineon (located at point 5b) is not necessary
7. You are done
Note:
The rest of the drivers are optional, and doesn't really matter.
Reason(s): They should work out-of-the-box with a clean windows 7 installation
Disclaimer:
1. Well, since arth1 pointed the redistribution thing, I would have to assert my position as per usual.
2. These files are meant for my personal usage, as I've uploaded it to a website for my easy references (and storage)
3. If by some unknown reason(s), you would like to download the contents (and use it), well, ... I won't be able to stop you can I?
4. This is Neither An Invitation to Treat, Nor an Offer. I am not making any commercial profit(s) out of it
For those who find the *Beep* sound irritating when you press the S1 / S2 / Fn keys, you can download this pi.wav file and replace the original one at C:/ -> Program Files (x86) -> Sony -> Vaio Event Services

Which of the two Bios should we install? I have a first generation Z.
If I want just to upgrade from Vista to Windows, I must install manually all the drivers? Is not automatic from Windows Update? -
Which updated BIOS would be used on a VGN-Z590 series computer?
This was posted in the other thread, but what are the US equivalents?
-
Z590 = Z2, R2170M3 recommended.
Z690 = Z3 and Z790 = Z4, R4043M3 recommended. -
Firestone: Not to ---- in the well, but do you have permission to redistribute these packages?

Firestone: Are those for 64bit or 32bit Windows 7?
Thank You -

Permission to download doesn't imply a permission to upload.
Also, in the case of some of the packages (like Upek Protector Suite and WinDVD), they are sold at a price to the general public, and must not be made available to users of other machines than those where the OEM has already paid for the license. Sony only has permission to distribute the software to owners of specific models.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
Firestone,
I'm assuming those drivers are for Win7 x64, right?
Will they work on every Z? From earlier Z's, like mine (520N) to newer ones (790, etc..). I guess it will, since pretty much all the basic drivers (I'm not including BD related drivers here) work for all the models.
I suggest you to create a new topic, since you have done a great job getting those drivers together, maybe even writing an Install Guide.
Thank you! -
-
Thanks for putting everything together Firestone, just ignore arth1
-
It all seems to work, save a few things.
When I switch video to Speed, the entire desktop is just on the left half of the screen, while the right half is just a bunch of colored vertical bars. And though the Fn buttons work, I can't actually adjust brightness with those buttons, though hitting Fn + F5 or Fn + F6 does bring up the little brightness box on screen. -
can anyone confirm the event service 5.0 works properly? when i installed the 5.0 off the FTP last week i lost brightness hotkeys in stamina mode (only changeable in the windows slider)
-
M8, I think you took all this too serious. Everyone can download anything from sony support, not just Vaio owners. What keeps off HP/Toshiba user to download software you are talking about from Sony site ? Nothing.
Therefore, going on Firestone cause he uploaded software is really way over...
Firestone, keep up the good job, m8 !
P.S. I would like to know what BIOS should go on my Z11 cause you're only talking about Z2 and up. Thank you !Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
BUt i'm pretty sure that NBR forum people have the correct machine to warrant the download right? Not like some 1st gen Z users, who are shut out in the cold with no vista x64 official drivers, nor windows 7 drivers -
I have a VGN Z555DN---which Bios for me?
-
urs should be 1st gen. u should get R2.
but i'm using R4 w/o issues -
I have a Z590 and just did a clean install with Windows 7 64-bit. As far as I can tell everything is running perfectly (including brightness in speed mode).
Thanks a ton to all those who helped! -
I have Win7 Pro 32-bit installed on my Z540E but I cannot find the nvidia driver for win7 x86 either from the FTP link or Sony eSupport. So, I'm currently using the Vista x86 driver and of course brightness does not work in both modes
Anyone? I would really appreciate!!!
Oh, btw, can I upgrade this new BIOS from Win7?
Thank you!!! -
Brightness works now, but the switch doesn't actually flip between speed and stamina. The menu about how I'm switching to speed and should close all my programs still appears, but clicking ok doesn't do anything.
-
i think u might have to reinstall Vaio event services -
You wrote that these drivers are for x64 bit? What about x32? Will they still work? Is really unacceptable from Sony to not offer full support (like all the other manufactures) for W7 upgrade.
-
Uhn, I dl'ed everything, and I'm almost ready to do a clean install of Win7 Pro x64.
The only thing I'm missing is the SmartWi utility (which I use pretty often). Do I have to dl it from, uhn, Z690 sony esupport page and bypass model validation?
thanks -
It wasn't mentioned that these are 64-bit drivers.
Like a couple people above, I'm trying to setup everything for a Z5 series (Z550n) but there are no 32-bit drivers listed on the site.
Can I use 32 bit drivers from a later series? -
do I have to install anything in certain order?
-
how about modded
Bios Revision : R2170M3 w/sony2.1 slic
and
Bios Revision : R4043M3 w/ sony2.1 slic
?????? -
Just installed on my Vaio Z17GN
I have ALREADY installed the new BIOS
BUT I:
Can't switch between video cards
Can't use S buttons and brightness settings -
seem like we need someone who has successfully install win 7 to clarify the order of installation including the appropriate driver to use. this forum fill out alot of win 7 on Z guide, yet none of it organize well.. its scattered around.
im still with Vista Business anyway, observing the situation.. -
@Firestone:
Fantastic work... updating all the apps an drivers now -
bios update
nvidia driver
event service 5.0
and done.
got all these files from the sony europe site (but they worked fine on my Z590). -
-
I have a sony vaio vgn-z26gn
i installed the 169M3 bios today which is the only one available via the sony asia-pacific website (no windows 7 drivers there yet)
just wondering do i need to wait to install the new nvidia or what.
cause it seems this bios update has screwed with the HDMI quality i get on my TV. I'm getting like sorta random red lines all over and stuff like that..
But I read that if you dont update to 170M3 then the new nvidia driver won't work and stuff.
confirmation? -
-
updated with a small installation guide on what to do
-
Once I get my upgrade disc from Sony, I will probably make a clean install (having the RTM and a working product key at that time) using the drivers posted here.
For some reason, the pointing device application does not install even though it tells me it was installed properly. I just went to the European site and downloaded the latest release available there...
All other apps have installed flawlessly as far as I can tell. -
@Jorlin
Did you get your Qualcomm 3G to work? -
Currently I am still working with this setup. I just updated the software and drivers to the latest Sony releases (and bios). So now I have no issue at all (including the previous unsolved issue with brightness in speed mode).
At this point I have a flawlessly working Win7 64-bit Ultimate running my Vaio-Z45x. The only thing I am missing is the product key for the RTM which will be included with the upgrade I hopefully will receive within the next two weeks... -
Anyone with a link to drivers that will work for the VGN-Z550 yet?
-
-
Maybe we will see an update soon. When Sony comes out with the Z5x series (Europe) there should be qualcom drivers available thorugh the support site... -
I think I'll wait untill Sony updates the W7 drivers or publishes the Z5x drivers + utilities.
Thanks again. -

im having issues with smart network 3.0, the bluetooth will only turn on when i toggle the switch at startup. i have to open the panel and click the switch every time; the previous version (which i rolled back to now) keeps it on. any solutions to this?
-
For those with 1st gen Zs with successful clean install of W7 64bit, what is your driver installation order?
I updated to the 2170M3 bios in vista. Then after installing a clean W7 and the drivers the brightness control seems unresponsive and my sd/ms card icon does not appear in my computer. -
Please post a link.
I installed nothing but Windows 7 Ultimate x64, the 2170M3 BIOS (after the 2169M3 earlier in the week) and the NVDVID-00208041-764.EXE drivers, but I don't even know where I found them. I posted this in the other thread.
Brightness works fine using Windows 7 taskbar power icon slider. Since I have not installed any other utilities, the Fn+keys of course do not work yet. -
haven't been following all the win7 threads very frequently, but just wanted to add that my Z690 is good to go now with Win7 x64, using the installation order on this thread, but I used the drivers on the Sony Z690 support page, with the nvidia driver from the Z890 page.
FN-keys working properly, including brightness for both Intel and NVIDIA cards. Also, I set the DisablePowerPolicy=0x00 flag for the NVIDIA driver and my GPU switching is going through properly when in battery mode. No more blank screen prob with my docking station either.
I'm using the 4043M3 BIOS.
