I've installed the video driver (187.35) but the brightness adjust still does not work on speed mode.

I did not, however, do a clean install of the graphics driver. I will try that after I do a clean install of Win 7 and see.

Upon installation of nvidia driver, newer version is installed, but brightness still doesn't work in Speed mode.

After installing Notebook utilities, brightness adjustment doesn't work in either stamina or speed mode. Guess its better to wait a bit until all the bugs are cleaned out.

yeah using notebook utilities 5.0 doesnt allow the hotkeys to work in either stamina or speed; going back to 4.3 allows it to work in stamina again.

    I have a 2nd GEN Z with a P8600 CPU which came preinstalled with a x86 version of Vista.
Planning on installing 6GB RAM along with Windows 7 PRO x64.

I know that we need a CPU (Intel Chipset) driver or something, but Sony doesn't have models with x64 CPU driver for the P8600 processor - would I be ok just clean-installing 7 without the cpu (Intel Chipset) driver?
The eSupport site actually has practically everything I need except that (and a working graphics driver...)

Also, I/O drivers, Parser drivers; are there any variations between various Z models? Would it be safe to just go and install those?
Really keen on upgrading - windows 7 gets released in 3 days after all....

    Cheers in advance

If there's win7 clean install guide?
I've installed W7 today andsome drivers after, now it shows up a BSOD on load in both modes =((
I will install it again today one more time. What should i do to install all the drivers for devices?

You can try the Intel chipset drivers directly from Intel's website.

Hi, second that, exactly the same problem.
Just to doublecheck, I had installed updated versions of the SFEP and SPIO drivers before attempting the nvidia update

Strangely enough, I didn't uninstall the older driver first, just ran the install for the new driver.
Can this be the cause of the problem? It seems strange for sony to ship a notebook with a broken video driver?

Tried on a European Z21WN vaio

There is a Z user from another thread who runs Windows Server 2008 who has the same problem. So far, that is the worst case scenario (next to the BSOD above...)

It is the new nVidia graphics thread (promoting the new driver) - they think that it is not the driver causing the problems, rather the EventServices (the app that displays volume and brightness levels on screen and plays other biggish roles on Vaios) that is buggy.

But when some roll back to the Vista graphics driver, they (if they are lucky) get back brightness control with stamina and the usual no control with speed.

Personally since hybrid is Sony-made, they have yet to intergrate their own hybrid graphics drivers and the new eventservice app - I will give them till 22nd this week. If not fixed, I am going to be the first asking some serious questions...

ALL (at least, the last time I checked) are reporting that they lost brightness control in BOTH stamina and nvidia graphics with the new driver.

Lets just wait for the 22nd and onwards; hopefully Sony is already aware of this and fixing as we speak (if not... Oh boy.... -_-*)

As I mentioned in the other thread I tried the new NVIDIA Driver with Win7 64B Prof resulting in the "just-half-the-screen"-Problem. It was still possible to switch between stamina (normal displaying) and speed (half screen). But no brightness control in both modes. After uninstalling the new driver and installing the old one for Vista 64B everything is as it was before the new driver.

Tried it on a european Vaio Z (Z4).

I have the updated Sony-bios which enables VT-mode, so official and sanctioned. Problem still remains, even after clean install of Win7 Ultimate x64.

Can it be the Ultimate version that's the problem? Find it hard to believe that there will be a difference in the video driver between Win7 Professional and Ultimate..

Also, it didn't matter whether I had the stamina switch to performance or not during install..

Weird, Sony is up to their usual reputation - wonderfull hardware, crappy drivers and software support

Not quite sure what you mean.

Are you saying that you have installed win7 x64 without UEFI and you DON'T have the aforementioned graphics problem? What driver are you using in this case? Do you have working brightness adjustment in both speed and stamina mode?

I just went back to Vista Video driver and wait for more time.
...and brightness quits working on both stamina and speed mode.
I just wonder Z8xx might have new BIOS which works with newer video driver!?

Wow.. one would think Sony would have tested these before releasing them. I have been having the split garbled screen with almost all of the new drivers released recently. 190.62 & 190.57 were the last two sets that worked for me (releasing soon.)

It seems as if this is an issue Nvidia will have to fix.

    Nautis!
Your screenshot captures exactly what I've been experiencing.
Somehow strange though, that Sony would release a laptop like the Z-series with that driver in the wild. I assume of course that they intend on selling it on Oct 22nd (when win7 releases) so that means the driver is final.
I am starting to think that it might be a BIOS issue

Could be something Sony messed with in the BIOS I guess. I am certain this is something specific to the Vaio Z as there have been more up to date drivers released for our Hybrid Graphics cousins that I have tested with the same issues.
    -

Has anyone gotten these to work in SPEED on the Vaio Z without the garbled screen?

Not sure what versions of Z you guys have, but the new drivers work just fine for me (minus the brightness adjustment of course). Z8xx are typically what would be released in the US market. Maybe the supporting software or bios is different for asian and european markets. But in any case, I have a Z570N, and the drivers installed just fine. (just as long as you don't install the new Sony Notebook Utilities).

But definitely never had the split screen or garbled screen problem.

I get this gut feeling that the Sony Notebook Utilities and Eventservice, alongside the new graphics driver are causing the garbled problems.

There is a good chance that the driver is a beta that was just 'found in the wild'. But knowing Sony, there is all the chance in the world that this new driver might only work with the 5th gen Z (hardware differences, but that is what we first thought with 8GB ram...).

Was planning on going for a x64 7 PRO clean install a few days back and this problem comes up - might keep an eye out for a few days before making the jump...

I had tried clean installed Windows 7 several times. I installed the graphic driver as the second one; right after the chipset driver. I even modded the new Asus and Fujitsu Hybrid driver and installed in my Z46. All come up with the same result, split garbled problem. Hence, the utiltiy and other drivers didn't cause the problem.

Maybe Asian and European model need a different graphic driver as it seems that some users in US do not have this problem. I hope that Sony can formally release the Windows 7 drivers for us after the formal release of Windows 7.

Thanks for the information. It means, that neither BIOS R4041M3 nor utility/other drivers cause this strage issue. It looks like the display driver works, if any, for whatever reasons on Z890 only.

Shouldn't be a resolution issue. It may be a video bios issue on the Nvidia side.

I wonder if I can get a registry export of the following branches from people who have the driver working.

    Export the following branches:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\nvlddmkm

if you need to you can email it to: [email protected] (use the full email including .spam)
