I noticed that some people were able to successful get xp working on their z notebooks. I have finally gotten all of the devices to properly work with the exception of the dvd writer. The dvd drive can not read dual layer discs blank or full. Am I missing a driver or firmware update for this?

Any help would be greatly appreicated!

Have you tried using different media, burned in different drives? Sometimes you get weird compatibility issues with burners and media of various types. I have two burners in my desktop - a Pioneer and an LG. The Pioneer produces discs which are readable in many more drives than the discs that come from the LG...

I think this is an ongoing issue with Z series. will not work on DL dvd's after change os to xp but works on it's original os that came with the unit which is vista and it being investigated right now. Hope fireware updates for the ODD to resolve the issue. I'll update the post when I got the solution.

Any other Z series user experience this issue!!

I haven't noticed this problem, but maybe I haven't used a DL disc yet? Babydarklord, if you know this as an existing issue, could you give us a link to another discussion or piece of evidence for this problem? I hadn't heard of it until GoSensGo's post...

I tried it already on my vgnz540 and it's not working and also i have a friend who have a vgnZ590 series notebook and just recently purchase and the same issue and I talk to a good friend of mine who actually working for sony support and told me that they don't have a resolution to that yet and he have heard couple of issue like this. The thing I forgot to ask him is if it's using a Downgrade disk from sony or using retail version of xp. I will just fallow up on him later.

I could understand it if there was a hardware problem preventing certain types of discs from working... but the bit that confuses me is that the issue only happens with XP (apparently). Surely the driver used for the drive is the standard driver and nothing special? Seems odd to me.

When I get chance, I'll try a DL disc and see what happens. :)

I called sony support and they were of no help.

The problem with dual layer disc is also present in Vista as I have tried opening dual layer discs with no luck. I've tried using memorex and verbatim brands. Anyone else tried using dual layer discs in Vista? I had burnt the recovery discs onto 2 dual layers but I can't seem to open them.

When I burned my recovery discs, I got the option to use either 2 x single layer discs or 1 x dual layer discs. There wasn't an option to use 2 x DL discs..?

Anyway, this is a bit of a worry even though I won't often have occasion to use DL discs - I'd like it to work when I do! I'll try a burn when I get chance and report my results. :)

My Z came with vista home premium and all of the bloatware. That may be the reason for the 2 dual layer or 3 single. Also, the machine makes a loud and unpleasant noise when I put a blank memorex dvd-r into it. Not sure why this happens but the notebook's dvd drive seems to have much difficulties in reading and writing discs.

Just a quick update on this. I burned a DVD+R DL disc using Nero on my Vaio Z (running XP SP3) and it burned and verified fine (and is readable on my desktop PC's Pioneer burner). :)

In case anyone's interested, I used Verbatim media.
