So, I am wanting to get a Z mainly for their weight (I am a student that commutes by bike) and I would really like a blu-ray drive, but the $400 price tag is a little steep for my meager student budget. My brother-in-law has a drive that he said I could have:

but I don't know if it will fit.

    EDIT:

    What is the drive's dimensions?

Will I need to purchase any driver/software solutions, or will they be available through Sony?

the Z usess 9.5mm drive with mini sata connector, you need to get the connector right.

I think you can get it on ebay, some stores sells the panasonic brand if i'm not mistaken. as for the driver, the driver that came with the blueray drive would suffice i think.

The drive you posted, will definably not work on the Z Series laptops. It is using a older PATA connector.

You will require a drive which is Mini SATA.

Dimensions of the drive is the same as all other dvd rom drives, there is only 1 size unless its a slot loading one.
They don't custom make drive sizes for different brands, they simply make the drive the same, and the manufacturer of the laptop would make a bracket that screws onto it to fit it in their own laptops.

hmm to the extent of my knowledge, there is the 12.7mm drive and 9.5m drive, most mainstream notebook uses 12.7mm, however ultraportables uses the 9.5mm drive, and toshiba portege even uses a smaller 7mm drive (CMIIW). you can check it here:

    http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/Sony,Laptop,Drives-CD-DVD-RW.aspx

there are diffrent sizes of dvd/cd/blueray size rom for notebook

I however agree that the dvd rom for the Z must use Mini Sata
