I'm fairly familiar with computers, but this problem has me stumped.
    I have a vaio z 2.4 gigahertz 4 ram 320 hd and so on

When I start the computer, everything works normally. After about 2 hours of operation, even if the computer sits idle for 2 hours after startup (showing desktop), it starts to slow down, and continues to slow until it becomes useless. Left idle for 5 hours, it's a total crash. The cursor gets "sticky" freezing for 2 - 15 seconds or so while the computer "thinks" then executes a move. The cursor looks like a slideshow, snapping from place to place as I move the mouse, making it hard to select menu items.

I have installed avira antivirus utorrent and bittorent.., using bittorent the problem gets to it´s peak faster. tried to uninstall bit it still slow down, jsut takes longer time.(networkkardprobmen)

I don't think the problem is mechanical, as it is cured immediately with a hot reboot (reset). The problem comes back in a couple hours, though. CPU temperature is around 36-50 degrees.

I don't think it is the removable drives as the problem persists with a clone drive substituted.

I don't think it's spyware or a virus, as I have scanned for both. The problem occurs when I am not on the internet, so I doubt someone is hijacking computer cycles.with internet scan and avira

I've used Process Explorer to see if background software was using up computer cycles, but my computer is 95% idle when the problem occurs.

Has anyone seen this problem? Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Dennis

First, use the recovery disk to go back to the default software/configuration. See if the problem still persists. If it does, then you know its hardware, and not software.

I had the same problem after installing XP in my SZ7 (hardware PID = unknown, no way to use it), the recovery did resole the problem

Are you sure you have everything in maximum performance settings?
    -Vaio Control center
    -Vista energy settings
    -Speed switch

I suggest you run a benchmark instead. It will be easier to do and a lot easier to compare.

Run PC Mark Vantage or 3d Mark06 for example.

If a system runs slower and slower, and not slow from the start, I would first suspect a memory leak. Open the task manager, set it to display processes for all users (button on the bottom), also show 16-bit processes (Options menu), and sort by memory usage. Now watch it, and see whether some processes appear to grow with time.

Well yes it does, that I have noticed, för example using IE it gets to around 500-700 meg of used memory goinng from 80 meg....
I have reinstalled everything, and would say that my system isnt snappy, rather sluggy, working fine though, but it has a slow start, like example starting a film it´s slowish the first seconds and then it get´s going.
I will download the a benchmark test and see what is says,,,

Sounds like you might have an add-on that's eating RAM.
From IE, choose the Tool menu, then "Manage Add-ons", then "Enable or Disable Add-ons".

Check all four sections in the pull-down menu, and disable anything you think might be the cause, starting with anything that is NOT from Microsoft, Sun or Adobe.

After this, give your machine a good virus-scan, because there are plenty of viruses out there that attack as an ActiveX control and will latch on to Internet Explorer.
