Hi all,
I have a Vaio Z i7 since 2009. I think heat eventually made it problematic.
I recently purchased a Vaio z i5. I want to head off the heat issue at the pass... or atleast aid the issue.
Will this help?
Mini Vacuum USB Air Extracting Cooling Fan Cooler for Notebook Laptop Computer | eBay
If it creates a vacuum will that STILL be an issue? Does it need air cooling it down?

No thoughts on this whatsoever?

Seems a bit silly. Effects are probably marginal at best. You shouldn't have to have something like this to prevent heat issues. If you have temp issues, I'd say repasting might be a far superior option.

Change thermal paste.
-
Check your temps first. I wouldn't directly recommend repasting on the Vaio Zs which I think would be tough to do for most people.
-
yeah, those older Z's had those thermal pads that could rip. I did it recently to my SVZ, the actual repasting was easy. Disassembling the motherboard to get to the actual HSF was a bit tricky though.

What's the best thermal paste to use? Still arctic silver?
-
I am using generic white thermal paste. No problems. I suppose I might get a further drop of a couple of degrees if I use fancy branded stuff like Arctic Silver but so far I have not needed to do so.
In my case cleaning the air passages helped (the inner section of the heatsink - between the fan and the vents where the hot air comes out - was covered with a generous layer of lint; had to take a toothbrush to it).
My real problem was the fan shaft itself which had siezed; the fan would actually stop rotating altogether. Had to dismantle the fan itself, clean the shaft etc. and then reassemble after lubricating the shaft with grease (tried with oil first, but that lasted just a couple of weeks).mobytoby likes this. -
I really dont have temp issues per say. These Z's just run hot. I have had a few and was just trying to "aid" in the cooling.
Definitely not into disassembly and repasting. -

Use Dot method. -
Note: this does NOT create a vacuum inside (absence of air) so your worries on that front are unfounded. It creates a lower pressure area where the air is normally vented, and the sucks out the air. Both this device and the internal fan will work in tandem. In both cases the air will enter the case of the laptop from intake holes on the bottom and maintain the needed air flow.
Note that the internal fan still needs to be running. If, like in my case, the fan stops rotating, the embedded controller inside will sense that and shut off the laptop after a few seconds, even though the temperatures are still within acceptable limits (e.g. in winter, stamina mode).
