After a weekend of various re-installs I worked out that my Wacom Bamboo tablet does not work if the Sony Z boots in Speed mode. If it boots in stamina mode it works fine. If the computer is changed to speed mode once Vista is loaded it continues to work fine.
The only problem occurs if the computer boots in speed mode. In that circumstance the pen does not move the mouse.
If would be nice if anyone else could confirm this finding. Mainly I'm posting in the hope I save someone else the effort to work this out.

i've exactly the same problem
in fact my whole comp screws up (and msn handwriting too) when i boot in speed mode.
there will be a popup bubble stating that DEP has closed pen input -
great -_- i have wacom bamboo as well and was planning to get Z... along with few issues pll already mentioned, this seems to be a major one for me to not get it -_-
-
I wouldn't consider this a 'deal breaker' but it's good to know about it as it took me days to work out why my tablet worked or didn't. -
I use Wacom Intuos3 tablet with the Z and have the same problem with pen/handwriting. To keep pen functionality I must do initial boot in STAMINA. The mouse that comes with the tablet works, however even if started in SPEED mode.
This problem effects both 32-bit and 64-bit Vista installations on the Z. -
i was so close to reformatting cos i thot it was some s/w error.
however, what happens if u boot in speed mode? even without the tablet plugged in? does it work as normal besides not having the bamboo work? -
hmm similar question to above:
i understand that if i for example i end work with tablet on Z (and keep tablet plugged) and turn of Z (in speed mode) then on next startup(unless i swithc to stamina) tablet wont work.
if i boot in speed mode and after system stars, then I plug bamboo, will it work?
or i have to run it in stamina -> plug tablet -> switch mode? -
with or without the tablet plugged in i get a DEP conflict problem which lags my whole system
which version driver are you all using btw? -
sigh.. im having this problem too. been uninstalling and reinstalling my tablet driver.. no fix for this from sony or wacom?
-
I've not reported this problem to either Sony or Wacom. Anyone else feel free.
My experience is that it doesn't matter what you do after boot, as long as you boot in stamina. Even if you sleep the computer in speed and wake it up and plug the tablet back in. It still works as long as you booted in stamina.
As I said before, now I know the cause it is not hard to avoid.
I see there has recently been a driver update from Wacom. I've not tested this yet. -
wonderful news fellow bamboo & vaio Z users!
i installed windows7 and there was no such problems with the bamboo thus far
there is however a small conflict with windows7 and vaio (regarding the brightness hotkey), however that should be fixed when win7 goes retail
cheers! -
Although I've been using my Bamboo in Win 7 I hadn't noticed it worked when booting in speed as I never boot in speed now for that reason. Well discovered!
Sadly I do tend to stay in stamina for the moment because of the brightness issue. -
if i have to change the brightness in speed mode, just go over to stamina mode, adjust the brightness, and go back over the speed mode, the adjusted brightness stays..
i only do that cos in speed mode, even the power options brightness bar dont seem to work
Vaio Z in speed (vs stamina) + Wacom tablet = Problems
