I use a Vaio Z (VGNZ690) which has a tendency to shut off randomly when it is unplugged, even when it has a charge left in the battery. When this happens, I'll be able to turn the computer back on, but usually it'll shut down again very soon into the boot process.

These fits of turning off usually come and go in bursts - there might be a 10 minute period in which I won't be able to get the computer to turn on, but after that it'll be fine. Additionally, the computer seems more likely to turn off when I move it (all of these shutdowns have occurred when the Vaio is operating off the battery).

I'm also pretty sure my computer isn't overheating.

I recently sent my laptop back to Sony after it experienced similar issues. They replaced the motherboard, but I'm starting to think that didn't help. Is there anything I can do to either fix the computer or to verify what's causing the problem?

I'll suggest to maybe contact Sony to have them take your notebook back for repair again. Good luck.

I figured as much. Anything I can do that's less painful before it comes to that?

It makes me think that a cable is loose. Shouldn't be hard to fix if that is the case.

I used to have the problem when I was using the R3054M3 BIOS. After I flashed the BIOS to R2168M3 I never had that problem again. Now for the Win7 graphics problem I upgraded the BIOS to R4043M3 and I have met the problem once.

Sometimes I have slightly similar problem, when it looks like the fan forgot to turn on. Don't know what it can be, but it happens often when running some Flash (eg YouTube).

The video starts to be choppy and if I don't do anything, it turns off and the down side is hot. When I turn it on, the fan kicks on at the highest speed. But if I notice the choppy video on time and move the notebook a little, the fan kicks on as well. Anybody has similar experience?
