Z2 is just short for all Z2x models.
    The Z22 is the newest.

    Hi,

the important things are the first 6 characters: VPC-Z21

VPC is what sony uses now (the VGN-Z were the ones from 2008-2009, dont quote me on the dates)
Z is the model version (also SA, SB, F, EA, etc.)
2 is the model revision (see also, VPC-F2 vs VPC-F1)
1 is the minor revision within the same model (ie. the VPC-Z1 had the Z11, Z12, Z13 and in Japan the Z14)

The minor revisions are what they are, minor, usually they just mean newer options or configurations (ie. Intel usually releases a 2nd batch of slightly higher clocked chips every year around september/october and manufacturers like to update laptops with those) but the core laptop does not change (screen, design, etc)

the models of Z thus far in order of newest to oldest:

    VPC-Z2 - model 2011 (Sandy Bridge)
    VPC-Z1 - model 2010 (Arrandale)
    VGN-Z - model 2008-2009 (Core 2 Duo)
    VGN-SZ/SR - even older
possibly the TT - 11" screen so take it as you will.
