I have a Sony Vaio Z from I purchased 2 years or so ago

    Model vgn-z26gn
    P8600 core 2 duo cpu 2.4GHZ
    windows 7
running in Performance mode ~ any other mode the PC lags cause the fan isn't running fast

even with performance mode and only google chrome browser 6 tabs open + itunes + filezilla Ftp, the laptop is running really hot and just generally its quite slow compared to when i first got it

is there something wrong here and are those temperatures too high???
is there any maintenance i can do like maybe clear out the dust in the fan outlet somehow??

Do you have VAIO control center installed? Check the termperature policy there and set it at least to balanced. This particular setting (silent mode) has caused dozens of Z users lags due to throttling.

Yea i have that installed, i actually have it in performance mode I think even balanced mode lags sometimes.
just generally though it seems the performance has drastically declined since when I first bought it.

So either the cpu has just died off a bit or the vents need cleaning or its windows

Try clean the fan and the heatsink from dust and check the heatsink if it sits properly on the cpu. Perhaps there are some heat conduction issues so the CPU throttles - resulting in lags. Replace the thermal conductive grease / pad with some new grease, that often helps to push down temps quite a bit.

What is the status of the HDD LED? Run Sysinternals Process Explorer and see if anything is using excessive resources. Prime suspect is the VAIO Folder Content Analyser. :p
