I'd like the screen brightness to change when I need it to and not when I don't. This means either keep it at 100% when plugged in but change to conserve battery life when not plugged in, or keep it at 100% in performance mode and change when in balanced mode (power plans). I can't find any way to make this happen. Any ideas?

Start > Control Panel > Power Options > choose 1 plan > change plan setting > advance power setting > Display > Display brightness > fill in "on battery" with your value and "plugged in" with 100%.
-
That doesn't work with the Vaio software auto-brightness-based-on-surrounding light. In the Vaio Control Center. Sony overrides it for both plugged in and not if I want for either, and I DO want it for not.
-
Just change the brightness manually with Fn+F5/F6?

VAIO control center>Display>Auto brightness

.... I want it to be autobrightness when not plugged in and 100% when it is.
-
I don't think that option is available. The auto-brightness setting is either on or off, I don't see any way to make it dependent on power source.
Er, looks like you already figured that out in post #3.
Guess you'll have to get used to Fn+F5/F6. -
choose a different power plan when using ACAD and Battery, for example when using ACAD set the power plan to "High Performance" then set edit the power settings to max brigthness,
while when on Battery mode set your power plan to "Balance" or "Power Saver" and then just edit the power settings and set the brightness to a particular level you want. -
actually even on the same power plan setting, you can set a different brightness when on ACAD and on Battery.
