I have just installed my D-Link DIR-855 wireless N router and using it with 2 Vaios.

My TZ92 has Intel 4965AGN and connects to the router at 300Mbps reliably every time.
My newer laptop is a Vaio Z570 with Wifi Link 5100 and it connects at only at 150Mbps, no matter what i have tried. sometimes it even drops to 135Mbps when positioned no more than 2-3meters from the router and no walls between them.
I'm using the router in 5Ghz wireless n only mode with WPA2 security. I have tried the original vaio Z wireless drivers and the newest from intel site also with same result.

I don't know if its caused by immature direvers\router fw or just the older 4965AGN is so much better..strange

I suspect a software glitch on either side as 300Mbps should be doable at close range no matter the actual wifi card sensitivity.

I would be very much interested in your experiences on the topic..

By the way, the DIR-855 replaced my previous Linksys WRT300N wireless N router. Both laptops were only able to connect to the Linksys at 54Mbps(so g not n)

It might be one of those router firmware issues perhaps? Given that the Intel card is so new, perhaps wait a while until the drivers mature, or look for a new firmware for your router if you absolutely need the higher speeds?

My router (Draytek Vigor 2820n) supports N but not 5GHz... so my maximum speed always seems to be 150Mbps. To be honest it's fast enough for me as I never try to stream HD video or anything like that. And if I were transferring gigs of stuff I'd want to use wired gigabit ethernet anyway.

As 300Mbps works w the Belkin and the Z, I guess it is my router indeed.
There is no newer official firmware for this router though, only a beta, but i don’t dare to try yet :)

I use a raid network drive to store all my data files, so speedy access is important for me. the 54Mps wireless G felt much slower even for accessing office documents or simply browsing folders.. so I guess having the full 300Mbps on my Z would not hurt as I’m going to use it as my primary work comp..

I get about 8.5-9 MB/s when transferring from my Z to my Dlink DNS-321 NAS device. Of course this performance is when I'm in the same room as the router.

With the wired gigabit connection, I get about 12 MB/s.

I'm pretty satisfied with the Z's wireless N performance. My wireless router is the Apple Airport Extreme.

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FW140E with an Intel pro wireless 5100 and an P8400 centrino2 processor running 2.26GHZ.

I use a netgear WNR8342 wireless router that my desktop connects at 270Mbps. 270Mbps is the maximum supported speed and I use a netgear WN111 on the desktop to achieve that speed. I use WPA2 security and there are no obstructions from my laptop to the router, which operates at 2.4Ghz. I sincerely doubt there is anything causing any interference.

The Vaio laptop never exceeds 135Mbps. It connects briefly at 270Mbps and then drops to 135Mbps. I would love to permanently bump the speed to 270Mbps, but this seems to be a problem for me as well.

Anyone out there have better speed with the same setup? My problem sounds similar to raczkri
