Is there a reason why my activity light is constantly flickering? It gets better when I unplug the laptop. But I can be doing nothing on just the desktop and it still flickers.

Probably because you're using Windows 7 and it does a whole bunch of useless stuff in the background.

Is it in a RAID? There are housekeeping tasks needed to keep the RAID healthy and recoverable.

This is over and above the normal disk usage, like antivirus and malware scans, system restore snapshots, file indexing, defragmentation, vaio content analyser, other content analysers like media players, itunes, Nero, Windows Updates, VAIO updates, yada yada yada.
