So i've had my vaio for less than a week, and I've realized when tilting the monitor back and forth, there is a pinching effect at the bottom edge of the lcd. This looks like manufacturing defect. Anyone else experience this?
Should I bring it up with the warranty? I hear Sony post sales services are crap. Their site and phone line for registering in malaysia are always down.

Sony after-sales support is hopeless, yes, in Europe and in the States. I've had positive experiences in Japan and in Korea (and to a certain extent, here in New Zealand).
But if you say the phone lines are down all the time, and if you absolutely wish to do something about it, I would suggest returning and replacing.
Though to answer your question, I would suggest looking at some instore models, just to make sure. Then try out their after-sales service. -
I assume you're talking about how when you open and close the lid, there's one spot at the edge of the monitor where it appears the frame of the lid is pinching the LCD? I have the same effect and noticed it the very first time I opened the computer out of the box!!! I can't promise that if you were to get it exchanged or repaired that it won't have the same problem since it just seems like a design issue.
I actually experience two pinching areas but intermittently. The problem is just on and off and I have not seen any lasting effects after using this machine for two months. My two spots are both on the lower left, one on the vertical part about two inches up from the corner, and the other is on the horizontal plane about 1.5 inches from the corner. If I were you I'd either return it and try again, or just get used to it. -
Just so you know, I don't have this problem. I tried moving the lid back and forth multiple times but it has no effect on the appearance of the screen.
-
This "issue" is normal because of the very thin screen. As you might already have noticed, the screen is flexible. However, it doesn't damage anything to the screen. Though if it really bothers you, you can reduce that effect by closing the lid from the sides with both hands.
-
I got it replaced, it turns out, most models on the floor had the issue too. But they replaced it with a new one anyway
-
Nice one

I think it has more to do with the hinges than anything (combined of course with the oh-so-thin lcd panel
). Those hinges can have quite a bit of friction, the ones that have more friction, evidence more of the pinching effect because they cause the screen to bend more.
-
does the new one still have this problem? I received my laptop on christmas eve from sony a few days ago and mine has this problem. is it worth exchanging or is it a waste of time. eveything else seems to exceed expectations otherwise..
Thanks,

that's the last generation Z in the picture, but that shows why flexibility is good for a thin screen because the screen will flex when bent and not snap -
Hmm, mine does it also if I open/close the lid fast. Never noticed it before. Looks harmless on mine.

Need to know if it's going back or not.

I really just need to jiggle/shake (forward and backward) the screen for the tiny pinch effect to show. It will only pinch the screen at about 90 degree angle, give or take 10 degrees.
I looked really close at the pinch point and it seems to me that the cause is the lower bezel on the screen is a tiny bit loose and touching the screen enough to make that pressure effect (as if you are lightly touching the screen with a finger). I can see the frame come off the screen and touch again as I wiggle.
I am charging my camera batteries and will make a video if you still want. -
Also, touch any lcd monitor (on the lcd itself) and you will see the exact same thing you are seeing when you touch the Z bezel. -
I would love a video if it's not much of a hassle, youtube won't work for me atm because t-mobile seems to think it is content that deserves to be blocked for over 18's and don't seem to understand that since I have a contract with them I am 24 and they should unlock it. anyway you can uploaded here Transfer.ro if you like.
Thanks a bunch. -
OK BDB,
I took 720p video in different angles and lighting but just could not capture the effect. The pinch effect is soo small it does not show on video, and it seems the pinch has even deminished since last night. I had a hard time finding it tonight.
Sorry (>_<) -
I figured it out.
I had to use a black wallpaper, the taskbar with transparency really helped make the pinch stand out.
Here is a link to the vid...

I hope you can DL it from mediafire, I did not want to give my email out to the .ro site you linked and it would not accept fake info from me during registration. -
So in summary (again). Yes the Z has a thin flexible screen. No it is not a problem. (it's actually a good thing, and one of the reasons one of the reasons to buy a Z in the first place). -
The replaced one had it too but it seems much much more subtle. Like I said, most of the store model had this issue too.
-
Anyway bottom line it's normal for this to happen however they shouldn't put the ribbon in that side of the screen as I believe this is what is causing the problem.
