Is it possible that the video drivers are somehow attached/speaking with some other Sony notebook driver?

Quite possible. Refer to the VPCZ1 case of rotation working with the nVidia GPU but not with the Intel GPU. I think the Intel driver is not only reading the capabilities of the connected display device but is also looking at some overriding flags possibly set by Sony in their infinite wisdom. :p

Tis possible. Can't rule it out. There is a optical drive and extra usb ports there too. We are dealing with a slightly different beast here so who knows what magic makes it work.

The graphics drivers are they are presented for download seem to be a pretty standard set though. We need to see if we can get a standard set that matches the Sony set. That would really show us where the differences are.

Installing Rage now to bring the PMD some pain! Video anyone? ;)

Edit: Looks like RAGE requires a special set of hotfix/upgraded drivers to work correctly. GRREEAATT! :( $60 on the HD collecting dust now!

Let's keep this a driver development thread. We can discuss games in the owner's thread or spin up a new one

Yeah, I know what an MSI is but wasn't able to extract either of these with UniExtractor. I run a .NET development shop (amongst other things), so I'm good at theory, poor in practice. I can't delegate this problem to a true tech :)

Okie, valid points. It would be a drag to put a raw Win7 on before testing anyway. If it gains us nothing, coo

Its just plain horrible. Take a look at my bios hacked games thread. The old 330m smashes it.

The only game that I have that truly out performs the Z1 (More than just a little) are Gears Of WWar and BF BC 2.

Havent seen anything yet. Weird thing I found with Steam's driver update option is that it takes me to Intels website. Also, SFIV reports the card as the Intel HD 3000.

    Strange indeed.

Looks like Sony released the Viddie driver for the Z22...

...and they are the same version  (There is an extra number in the CCC, but I don't think it is meaningful)

    Z21:
AMD Radeon HD 6650M version 8.830.7.0
Mobile Intel HD Graphics version 8.830.7.0
Intel Display Audio driver version 6.14.0.3074
Catalyst Control Center utility 2011.0519.182 3.31140

    Z22:
AMD Radeon HD 6650M version 8.830.7.0
Mobile Intel HD Graphics version 8.830.7.0
Intel Display Audio driver version 6.14.0.3074

...and the drivers from Sony Asia are finally available. The ATI bits are 8.830.7.0, same as in the US.

Support for VPCZ227GG : Z Series : VAIO Notebook : Sony Asia Pacific

Interestingly, there appears to be a separate installer for the Intel GPU. However, the ATI package is the same size as the US unified driver package.

I'm not sure if this is significant, but I'll test them at some point this weekend.

Try this, it has worked for me in the past when backing out of one of the driver packages in this thread:

    1. Download the appropriate vid driver package for your machine, also get the HDMI audio driver
    2. With the PMD attached, uninstall the ATI driver package
    3. With the PMD attached, uninstall the HDMI audio driver
    4. Reboot
    5. With the PMD attached, go into device manager and uninstall the video driver. If it asks to delete everything, accept it
    6. Shut down, then pull the PMD, boot
    7. Go into device manager and uninstall the video driver. If it asks to delete everything, accept it
    8. Shut down, re-attach the PMD, boot up
    9. With the PMD attached, install the normal Sony vid driver package
    10. Install the HDMI audio driver
    11. Reboot

well now.. there is another problem :(

I installed the drivers from the sonys web site, it went thru but now, when I plug in the pmd, window repositioning is terrible, its shaky and like it is overhelmingy tiring the computer...

you know how it freezez over the screen when you drag a window around?
it is not smooth at all ???

but when I unplug the PMD, on intel HD it seems fine...

what might cause this now.. any ideas?

I mean this kind of video driver problem last happened back in 1990s when I was trying to get my linux box up and running.. w7 and this 3000$ vaio, I really dont wanna be losing time with such non-sense generic-video card / drivers issues guys... and I am tired :(((

    help please

I am thinking.. I installed the driver from the sony-asia site. But I bought the labtop from Hong Kong so my exact model VPCz227GG is matching on that site so it really shouldnt be about the wrong drivers...

Should I try the US site drivers?? I think I will do that.. :(

Hi.. I had some crazy mix up with installing drivers before attaching the PMD... and noow no mattter what I try, I can't get the AMD driver from the Sony site to install. I tried deinstalling all the drivers including the ATI HDMI driver but the PMD gpu shows up as a VGA device. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

Intel driver improved opengl support is confirmed.

Is the ATI driver that much newer than the old one?

I forgot to take a screenshot for comparison, what does the Catalyst Control Center/Information/Software info show on the old driver (maybe one of you that havent installed the new one can attach a screenshot)?

    New version screenshot attached below.

I´ve created a pdf file with the driver information with old driver to compare :)

But what ATI Catalyst version is 2011.0901.1660.28670 exactly?

The long one is for the Control Center, the craptastic ATI config tool. Not really all that important.

I'm still working on my first cup of coffee, but it looks like the ATI core driver when from 8.830.7 to 8.830.7 .2. If that second bank of numbers is a date, the old version was made on May 19th and the new on Sept 1st.

The latest ATI driver version is 8.911 vs the 8.83 in the new package.

Nautis: Will this help with the custom package effort now that we can do a before/after comparison?

Sorry for my late answer, this is an official sony driver - i´m not sure why this driver isn´t available on official vaio update yet. Maybe i´ve to ask my sony contact if there is a newer driver available or in progress.

Hello. I have VPCZ2390X with PMD (AMD6650HD inside). But after I messed up with video card drivers (installed amd catalyst directly from amd.com), my system thinks that I have AMD 6700HD instead of AMD 6650HD in PMD. And I cannot roll back now. So, external video card does not work. How is it possible to completely uninstall it and clean install again? And worst of all - I do not have recovery disks available.

    I already tried:
Driver fusion - did not work
Revo uninstall - did not work
Device uninstall - but when I reconnect PMD - system now thinks that I have AMD 6700HD.
Re-install original drivers from sony.com - did not work.

Sony advised to use recovery media - but when I bought notebook I was too greedy for free space, so I deleted recovery media space in my notebook... So I have no recovery media available.
They advised to buy it - but together with shipping cost - they would be very expensive.

    Please help!
    Please advise!
Your help would be greatly appreciated!!!
