My last laptop was an Asus, and it would idle between 30-40 and 50-55 on load. I just received my Sony Vaio Z2, and despite having a room temperature of 25C, the laptop idles at over 50C, and any simple task such as browsing or word editing would push the temp over 70C.

I don't really mind the fan noise, but is this temp normal for Z2? I read somewhere that Vaio SA has similar temps, so I'm assuming that this isn't necessarily some fault unique to the laptop I received. Before anyone suggests, I've taken all proper care to ensure adequate airflow etc.

If it's any indication, my Z 1 idles at 55C and load at ~90C. Load at ~80C if I disable turbo boost.

My previous laptops have mostly been significantly larger gaming laptops, as such their temps are similar to a desktop's. I guess this is simply normal for ultra-portables then? I even read that MBP goes over 100C.

I'd say that it's normal, but personally I'm not comfortable with temps above 80C.

Temperature highly depends on which thermal strategy you choose in the VAIO control center, if you choose Performance mode, your CPU will most of the time run at max speed.
I use to set Silent Mode, because it became extrelly quiet and cool, because the CPU speed is limited to 1600Mhz.
In silent mode my idle temp can reach 31°C ~ 43°C and load temp are like 60-65 °C
In performance mod under Prime95 the highest temp reach was 83°C

I was just wondering how hot the high end Z2 gets. I'm using poor man's Z2, the toshiba portege r835 with i5-2435m. It gets really hot up to 95C on full load (turbo 2.8GHz, 4 thread), but on normal use everywhere is cool to the touch and it's very quiet. Idles at 45C, normal internet and stuff gets it to 50C with minimal fan. I guess high end like Z2 also has its limit because the limitation in size.

I'm curious if there's more samples. How hot does your Z2 get on turbo 2.8 GHz (for i5 models) with 4 threads loaded?
