The Z22 now is ready for CTO!
I read from avmaxfan's post a month ago that the current z series was going to be discontinued already. That assumption is correct and sony showed the gold Vaio z for pre orders as the z22 model and it's ready to be shipped on or near (October 14th (Scratch that)) Now. But we are still awaiting further models and a CTO
Comes with an upgrade from the original 2620m processor to the 2640m processor.. Not to big of an upgrade but it still will be a bit faster then the old one.

well, they just added i7-2640m processor and golden color (for US, was already available in EU). No refresh for PMD though

How long until Computer Cowboy orders one?
...still waiting for them to update the CTO Z. It'd be nice to see the other two color options (carbon fiber, gold) added to the choices. -
The gold looks REALLY nice in person. Not nearly as blingy as the photos look.
-
-
What would be great is if the drivers are improved, not the hardware.
-
-
The only drawback to the gold config on the US site is the fact that RAM is only 6GB instead of 8. I'm really hoping they offer it as a CTO.
-
-
^It was officially released today. I believe gold will be signature only.
-
Any additional choices for the CTO like possibly carbon fiber?
-
-
signature is running a couple weeks behind. but z22 and basically all the holiday stuff was released today.
-
6GB RAM = Meh
With all the lameness of the PMD and lack of good drivers I might just wait for the Z3. -
-
But any idea when the Z3 might come about? -
Don't really care too much, my Z1 rocks, I can still upgrade that more. -
I'm guessing that the gold will also be available on the high-end Signature option their bound to come out with, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD for around US$4500.
-
-
You still can, their website says "new model review coming SOON !"
-
I am still not seeing a Gold model on the US site that is not crippled with 256GB SSD and 6GB of RAM. -
I'm guessing you will pretty soon. Sony has been offering two Signature models of the Z2, a maxed out Z and a weirdly configured (6GB RAM on a $3K computer???) cut-down version. They have put the cut-rate Z22 on the site and taken down the both Z21 Signatures. By the time the Z22 is available, expect a high-end Signature, gold, 512GB SSD, 8GB RAM, FHD, Blu-Ray burner, Windows 7 Ultimate for a penny under $4,500.00.
-
Well, I think Sony may have lost a sale, they want to play games with the availability of specs and colors. I'd probably have jumped on it a couple months ago if they had the config that I wanted. Here we are a couple months later and we find out that, the PMD is even more of an epic fail than we first thought.
I guess what I am saying is that I would have been all over it if, I didn't have a Z1 or if they had what I wanted on release day when I was still romanced by the hype.
On another note how come only Japan gets 6300 WiFi? We don't don't need it in the US?
Sony's separate configs for different markets boggles my mind. Canada doesn't need WWAN?
Lenovo sells stuff properly, with all the config options, but I don't want what they sell. I want what Sony sells, sort of, but I can buy what I want?
Even if they get a Gold Sig model topped out... you have to spend $4,500 to get 8GB? What happened to 16GB, now that is something I could really use, I top out my RAM every day with three instances of Visual Studio, SQL Server, PhotoShop, Outlook 2010 and multiple Virtual Machines on Hyper-V.
If Sony had put 16GB of RAM in this thing that would have really sealed the deal for me. -
^It's really quite simple. They have business units located in each country and those business units build the configs that they think will perform the best for their territory. They can't keep everyone happy (obviously), but if Japan ran the whole deal, we'd all have Felica and Japanese keyboards.

Is there much point in waiting for the i7 2640m? Until Oct 11th the UK Vaio site gives a free upgrade to the i7 2620m (probably trying to get rid of their processor stock) so I'll probably save £180 and bite.

you can check this link:
Mobile Processors - Benchmarklist - Notebookcheck.net Tech
2620 is at position 29, and 2640 at 27. -
Here is an article that mentions the 2640...they weren't too impressed by it:
Review Intel Sandy Bridge (Core i7) Update - Notebookcheck.net Reviews -
^That's misinterpreting the article. No question that the 2640 is not as fast as the quad-cores being discussed but those chips have a higher TDP.
On it's own, the article was impressed with the new dual core chip.

None. Or at least the probability of better speakers in the Z22 is so small it exists only in the realm of theoretical mathematics.
-
When will the CTO version with the new processor become available on the Sony website?
-
The CTO Z22 should be on the Sony site any day.

I'm an infrequent visitor, but agree with Computer Cowboy....
For me it's like this:
- miniscule updates
- I don't really like how Z2 looks and that CD is external b/c I can take it
out miself and install a 1Tb hard drive..
- I write some CUDA programs and there is no Nvidia inside anymore
- Sometimes I run Mac Leopard + Ubuntu 11 on Win7 plus MySQL, SQL 2008, some Java servers + Eclipse and IntelliJ even Flash studio - all at the same . And it works super fast..
Some of the links.. look at the wattage on first placers and compare to Z => 130 watts ver. 30/35. Makes a huge difference..
Lets see what Z3 brings... Put freaking Nvidia back..
PS. Why they make this laptop in gold, for pimps who have PhDs -

too funny! -
^
CC shows up!!! -
^Awesome...
-
What a find!

Do you guys think the Z3 will be Ivy and have 16GB of RAM, maybe I'll just wait for that. IDK, I want an Intel 600GB SSD for my ODD bay. -
-
I'll guess that there will be an IB Z3 next year, maybe around late spring depending on countless factors including whether there are any unexpected glitches associated with the new chip.
16GB? Not likely. The Z is aimed at high-end users who are more interested in size, weight and, if they don't know better, prestige. I doubt most Z buyers even make effective use of 8GB.
The main benefit of a (hypothetical) IB Z3 would be improved on-chip graphics meaning that there will be less reason for most users to mind the PMD will still probably be screwed up. -
I'll get another Z if/when it comes with Quad-Core
And maybe some super advanced light-bridge fiber optic link for external graphics which could deliver like reallistically speaking about 250 Gbps maybe? internally bypassing PCI Express links ofc...
and why can't they just make an optional phat PMD? did it really have to be that thin, be the only option, and be so underpowered?! sure there's a vdock but i'm sure most fanboys will buy a SONY product than anything else.. so as long as its reasonable to the most.
pcs aren't supposed to be like macs, i want to see Options. -
^ Yes, options, that is really all that I want, can I just get some freaking options for my $3K-$4K computer, is that too much to ask? Really Sony?
-
I think the past 3 posts are quite reasonable, I'm thinking of getting a lower end Z22 now and a z3 next year or a z the year after.
-
Maybe a Z3 with the slice battery/dock containing the GPU? It would resove the issue of the GPU using more battery, and it would also be a nice snap on unit. It would also resolve the "slim MBA form factor," and "we want more power," issues, too
But iirc, NBRf hates speculation in "normal," (is there ever?) threads, so I'll shaddup -
