I have a very odd problem... My daughter's vaio is not recognizing the ac power cord... and ultimately is not charging. The computer is only 4 months old.. Any suggestions... She is at school and is 6 hours away... I tried talking with support but at 10 pm its very difficult to get them to understand she is not here. It is very frustrating... Any and all help is appreciated.

Does the AC adaptor have a light on it that shows it is receiving power? If so and it isn't illuminated, she should try moving it to a known good outlet. Sounds silly, but I've seen it turn out to be that. If there is a light and its lit or there is no light at all, there isn't much more she can do to test it. If she plugs the AC adaptor in firmly and the battery charging light does not come on at all as it had in the past, the problem may be with the adaptor itself or with the AC connector on the motherboard. One thing to try would be removing the battery and trying to power up from the AC adaptor alone. If that doesn't work, and she's tried in different outlets, there is a hardware problem with the adaptor or the connector.

When she plugs the cord in does it feel loose at all or does it fit snugly? That may be a connector issue if its loose. If she looks inside the connector does she see the pin that the adaptor fits over? If not the connector is probably broken. If she turns the plug in the socket or moves the cord around can she get the battery light to come on at all? That could be a broken wire in the cord or a problem with the connector. In any case, this will probably need to get an RMA for service to check the connector or if your reseller/manufacturer supports it you could start by trying to get them to cross ship her just the AC adaptor.

I wouldn't recommend a third party adaptor because you're within your one year warranty and it might damage the laptop/void the warranty.

If your daughter happens to be electrically savvy and has a multimeter laying around she could try testing the adaptor to see if it is producing power. Otherwise, there aren't any others steps you can take that I can think of.
