    hello

i just reinstalled winxp sp3 on a sony s3xp, i don't have the vaio installation cd but i did a clean reinstall of windows xp and installed essential drivers but it was quite slow, eg seconds to load a directory, or long pauses during web browsing

now i've installed all the original drivers and utilities and am running without power saving but it's still sluggish, eg the mouse pointer jumps about the screen rather than moves continuously when the cpu is under any load at all

i assume there must be some software issue

    thanks if you can help

Have you installed the correct video and touchpad drivers for XP?

yes, they're both from the original driver package
i wouldn't think it has anything to do with the mouse itself, but vga, power, something like that maybe

Open the task manager and look and see how much CPU utilization you have while browsing or while the system is so slow.

this is while opening a few sites in quick succession in firefox, it really shouldn't be this slow with power management off

also i increaesed the size of the pagefile and that hasn't helped

Processor usage shouldn't be that high, what process is sapping all your processor time? And what are the power settings set to... like balanced or performance? If this is XP, put it in "Always On" and that will put it at the highest processor frequency, and won't allow it to speed-step to a lower frequency. Also, does your S have a speed/stamina mode?
