The sound on my Sony Vaio VGN-AR21M has suddenly become crakly and broken up. Do I need to replace the speakers?

Could also be a sound-card problem, the easiest way to check is to plug in some headphones and see if there's problems there too. Although if the headphones work, use those or use some speakers (the AR is too old of a laptop to be economically spending money to fix it)
