Hey guys, I'm having a little problem with my HDD on my SZ120p. It won't boot into windows. Everytime I try to boot, right after the vaio sign, it show just a black screen with tthe message "Error to load operation system". The problem that might of caused it was that the previous shutdown proceedure right before this happened was improper. Meaning that the system was automatically shuting down, but while shutting down I was impatient (since the computer was takinga long time) and clicked start then shutdown, but instead of hitting shutdown I accidently hit the hibernate button in the middle of a shutdown sequence that was already happening. The next thing I knew, the computer shutoff, but when I turned it back on It showed me that error. This sucks cuz i have a lot of info on there That I'd like to keep. Theres nothing wrong physically as i downloaded seagates diagnostic programs and the Sata drive passed. And I tried loading the computer using a knoppix boot disk, but the HDD wouldn't mount, even on a force mount. But the other wierd thing is that I can still see my files in linux but only under /media/sda1 and there is no HDD icon on the desktop only a USB drive linking to the HDD. Please GUys I know my problem is long but I would be really greatfull if anyone here can give some input. I don't want to lose my data and don't want to do another HDD recovery. THanks so much!

What? It won't boot at all, or can you press F8 to configure?
If so, try starting in last config that worked, and if that doesn't work, start in safe mode, then shut down properly from there.

By the way, my SZ shuts down in less than 10 seconds.
You need to do some optimizing ;P

haha i know I do. Yeah this thing won't even go to that screen where you can press f8. right after vaio screen, that's it. I think that windows lost some file or it got corrupted. I know this because in knoppix, I can't mount the drive but i can do a read only and all my files are still there. and i can transfer out my info on another volume. But I kinda don't want to do that. Too much work. Is there any way of just fixing windows with out having to lose all the other data?

Ok Archie, well that linked tutorial didn't work. Meaning it couldn't even see the previous windows os installed on the hdd. Which is wierd since I could see that there is clearly a windows folder when I view them on using knoppix. So I think that something like a partition or something is missing that's causing the computer not to look for the partition where my files are. Also DISKPART shows that the volume is unknown but shows that there is data on it since it was the same capacity that I left it at when the computer was in good condition.

If you can get to a recovery console with booting to a boot cd or windows xp cd?

Try the fixboot c: command on the repair console or the dos prompt.

It won't let me do that beucase there was a "unrecoverable" problems when I tried to run chkdsk and I think that it needs that to pass to continue.

Whoops: wrong problem, you'll probably have the memory problem soon too. Anyway, I had your same problem previous and had to replace my hard drive because it was completely fried. There was no saving any of the data. I think the problem occured because the computer was overheating due to poor design. This overheating caused the computer to spontaneously shut down and then eventually ruin the memory slots.

sounds like the well documented memory problem. Here is a link where many people have had your problem:
    http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/5449/?o=20
first try switching out your memory and leaving slot 2 empty. If nothing apply pressure to the memory as noted in the above link. sony should have issued a recall for this widespread problem but they haven't.

Its cool now, I think the MBR and other startup files got corrupt from the improper shut down, but I think I got it fixed now. Thanks guys!
