Hello forum,
I am interested in upgrading my vgn-FZ283bn, but I seem to be confused on what is compatible with my motherboard. It sports a core 2 duo, 1.80 Ghz, but could i replace it with the first gen Core 2 extreme 2.80?
Also, does anyone here know how much RAM and what kind it can support?
Thank you for any help in advance. If you need more information, please ask.
Thanks,
Ryan

Ok i have found it is DDR2 and can hold up to four gigs.

You can replace it with a X9000
Intel® Core?2 Extreme Processor X9000 (6M Cache, 2.80 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)with SPEC Code(s)SLAQJ, SLAZ3
To reduce heat output though you might want to consider a T9500
The memory will most likely be upgradable to 8GB.
Unless someone has tried this i cannot say that it will definetly work. However, as owners have found with out the SZ which uses a similar chipset owners have found out that it is upgradable to 8GB. -

Also I am going with the T9500 because it is a 500$ difference for only .2 GHz, and they have the same cache size so I'm confuzzled at that price difference. -
ok. The processor is completely integrated so it isn't upgradable. The ram can only hold 4 gigs but it is a great improvement. Next I am going to get a 7200 rpm HD.
Thanks for the help,

I am certain that on most FZ models the CPU is not integrated. Because when folks have had onsite service to replace the motherboard for an NVIDIA repair issue, the service tech pulls the CPU and moves it to the new motherboard. I watched him do so on my FZ190, and others have reported the same thing on other FZ models.
RE: Memory, how did you ascertain that the limit is 4 gb?

This FZ owner upgraded their processor from a T7300 a T9300.

Listed specs are sometimes inaccurate. It's possible that 4GB modules wasn't available 3 years ago, who knows.
As i wrote before the SZ6-7 series can take up to 8GB of ram and that has a GM965 chipset.
Intel lists the max ram as 4GB but others have upgraded to 8GB with no issues.
Other laptop owners with a PM965 chipset have also upgraded to 8GB.
However, there can always be BIOS limitations and unless someone attempts this upgrade no-one can say it will definetly work. -

Rachel beat me to it. I was about to say the same thing. Do you know if anyone has ignored the spec and tried it?

OK I'm opening it up right now.
