The big question I have is in terms of long term durability and build quality,
does anyone here have an idea of which you think is better built in general between the Sony Vaio FW series compared to HP DV5??

I am hoping to get a good sale but whatever I get needs to last me for as long as possible.

Consumer Reports is probably the best source of info for a generic question like "which is more reliable, Sony or HP laptops?". They recently published such ratings in their Dec 2008 issue. Luckily, I still had it in the trash (their Jan issue just came out) and I was able to get at the data for laptops:

Sony had the fewest repairs, 18% of their 63K respondents, of the 7 brands. HP had the greatest, 23%. They also say that less than 3 points aren't meaningful. So I read this as saying that Sony laptops are a little more reliable than HP laptops. BTW, the laptop order goes Sony-Lenovo-Compaq-Toshiba-Dell-Gateway-Apple-HP. And the desktops order is quite different (Apple-Compaq-eMachines-Dell-HP-Sony-Gateway).

Personally, I've had several laptops of both brands and most recently a Sony SZ460 and an HP dv5t CTO. I've never had any hardware problems with any of them other than from my own fault (I dropped a Sony and had to replace the hard drive). I generally feel that HP gives you a lot of features for your money but not the sleekest and fanciest form factor, though they are improving in sleekness. Sony stuff is very cool and you can get very advanced/light/features but as you go up the cost ladder.

Most recently I got the dv5t directly from HP and using one of their $400 coupons (watch techbargains.com). It's not a light thing (15" widescreen) but a really nice 64-bit/1080p/blu-ray/bluetooth/webcam/fingerprint/everything for about a grand. Great deal, I thought.

Thanks very much for the helpful reply. I will keep my eye out for a super deal on either one I think. I have seen good deals off and on at Best Buy on the Sony VAIO FW.
