Okey, I decided to buy SSD to replace my current HD 250Gb @5200 rpm on my Sony Z-91
Can I just swap my HD to SSD without any modification? I do not do Raid 0. Just singel SSD.

Right now, I kind of confused what the best brand of SSD should I get?

There are a lot of brand to choose from....
I am planning to get 120Gb and I can find the price range from $200 to $600

Any recommendation of the good SSD for my laptop?

Btw, I come across this good article about SSD

I just installed a 120GB OCZ Vertex SSD. Runs great and price was really good.

Check the SSD thread here on NBR...you can find many recommnedations there...

I chose Samsung MLC 128GB, as for $285 it's very nice piece of cake. Not the newest one, not the fastest one...but enough space, runs cool, silent, low voltage and no common problems found yet (if I'm right)...

    Agree.

I have a Corsair S128 which is Samsung MLC rebrand. I've been using it for 2 months and so far so good.

I think you should avoid using OCZ Vertex. There is currently lots of firmware issue. OCZ have a version with different firmware but no one knows for sure if its any good.

Since you have a huge budget, go to Intel or Samsung.

Yup. A few weeks ago Geeks.com had the Samsung 64GB SLC drives for $179 and I stocked up. Not the fastest by current standards, but very reliable and the price was right.

Color me cynical, but I would shy away from any of the new OCZ models until there is an established track record, as the performance of their earlier drives was abysmal (I know, I had a 64GB Core V1 drive that stu-stu-stuttered all day long).

Has anyone used the Vertex yet? The article mentioned at the top of this thread said the Vertex is the cheap but great alternative to the IBM drives.

Yes, I have a Vertex in my Z. OCZ has some firmware updates because there appear to be some issues when the drive reaches max capacity. I have not experienced these symptoms. Updating the firmware is pretty painless though.

    Great drive, very fast.

What size drive? Is there a way to have two drives in the machine?

Samsung MLC (128GB) here, (also has a Samsung SLC SATA2) I can tell you after having both in my Z that the MLC is MUCH slower than the Sammy SLC (64GB). so if you want performance SLC is the way to go (maxed out at 64GB for now) and if you go MLC then you can go up to 512GB... Sammy is great though.

I got the 120GB which is more than enough for my needs. As far as two drives, I believe someone on this forum has, or is attempting, to hack a second SATA drive in place of the optical drive.
