I have two laptop computers. One is an HP 6710b, the other is a Sony Vaio VGN-BX760. Both have the Intel 965 GMA X3100 video chipset. Both run XP SP2. Both are connected to the same KVM switch with VGA cables on the laptops' external VGA ports.
A Dell 2408WFP display is connected to the KVM Switch's console VGA port.
The HP's Intel video driver (v6.14.10.4873) supports rotating the display so that I can rotate that 24" display to vertical and e.g. read an online magazine in full life size.
The Sony Vaio's Intel video driver (v6.14.10.4785 or v6.14.10.4935) simply lacks the screen rotation setting.
What's up with that? Did Sony do something stupid to disable the Intel 965 GMA X3100 video chipset's ability to rotate the external monitor display, or did HP do something wonderful in its apparently manufacturer specific version of the video driver to enable the video chipset's ability to rotate the external monitor display?
How do I get the Vaio to let me use the rotation feature on my external display?
Thanks!

Answer to my own question, developed by comparing registry settings between the two notebook computers. The Vaio video chipset can rotate the display. For some reason, a registry setting is simply missing on the Vaio. Adding it makes the display rotation component of the Intel video driver configuration control panel appear and work properly.
In key:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ialm\Device0
Add DWORD:
Display1_EnableRotation
With value:
0x00000001 (1)
And reboot.
